Ok here goes. I have an '80 elky that had a fire. I have a new wire harness for the engine compartment. All the lights hook up, even tho the harness is for a 2 headlight setup. The problem I'm having is getting only the basic stuff hooked up to the engine, not getting spark. I'm not very smart, it would seem lol. I bought a gauge package(oil pressure, ameter, & water temp), so that should take care of the idiot lights (wires) for the temp, oil sending unit and alt lights. Where does the back of the alternater get hooked up to, and do I just run the two prong plug to my new gauge? I have my battery hooked up to the starter, the red wire to the same bolt on the selonoid, and the smaller wire to the selonoid also. I found a hot wire(pink or purple) that plugs into the distributer. But I'm pretty much lost from there. Help me get back on the road please.
thanx,,,,,,dug

The large red wire on the back of the alt goes to the battery positive. Your gauges won't work unless you changed all your sensors to gauge type.

Study the wiring diagrams HERE (http://elcaminocentral.com/article-114-thread-1-1.html)

Thanx for your quick reply. Does the wire on the back of the alternater complete the circuit? I got all new sensors with my gauge kit. Oil pressure line replaces sending unit, new temperature sensor(where is the best place on the block to put it?), and new wires for the alternater. Where would the plug on the alternater normally go?
