I have been a vette man and now want a new toy. I have always loved the El Camino. I have an opportunity to buy a 71 SS with a 350 engine that has 49K original miles. Interior is very good to excellent and the body is good with only rust bubbles on both lower panels on sides. This car runs great. Prices seem to be all over the place and I would appreciate the expert advice that this site can offer. Any input is appreciated.

Welcome to ECC/NECOA William!
Do you have pictures? It's difficult to appraise a vehicle that we can't see. Take a bunch, get some webspace here, and show us what you're interested in. We will either drool in envy at what you've found, or rip it to pieces as the fake SS that it may be. There are many, many SS clones out there and posting a few pictures of the interior, exterior, engine compartment, VIN, and cowl tag will get you a better response.

6K, maybe 8K depending on how nice the interior is. most people want more but that doesnlt mean it's worth it. keep shopping! bob

From what I've seen and what I've read/looked at in "Restored Condition" or "Excellent condition" you should expect to see a price of around 15 to $20,000.00 for an Original SS with supporting documentation. Good condition I would say in the neighborhood of something like 5 to 8,000.00 and without a Engine or tranny but with all else, even in bad to poor condition around $1,000 to 2,000.00 depending on the body / chassis condition.
That is just the prices I've seen. The big auction house in Arizona or where ever it is, got $10,000.00 for a 4th generation (1977) El Camino, non SS Non Classic, just the basic Elky. The one you are looking at is considered to be "Muscle Car" era vehicle and that alone puts a premium on it.
There are a lot of people that will not pay that for the vehicle but from all I can see that is the ball park figure.
Its subjective unless they have trophies on it.

I guess my question is how do I know that this is a true SS or a clone? The asking price is $11,500 and to have the body completely done on frame will run around 2500. The interior is perfect and the 49K original miles is attractive.
