: Fixing a horrible paint job

When my dad got the 83 in 05 it was white. He had it painted black at a horrible shop *cough* Earl Scheib *cough*. They painted over chrome and spring tie downs in the bed, and you can see the over spray behind the side mirrors. Well good thing my dad got the 6 year warranty as its cracking on the hood and pealing in numerous places. Now I don't know anything really about paint other than what looks good and what doesn't lol but normally wouldn't you remove the old coat of paint? In some sports where its pealing it looks like i could chip the black away and still have the glossy white looking good under it. In April I'm going to take it back down (when the PNO runs out from the DMV) should they be forced (for lack of a better phrase) to get rid of the prior color before applying the new paint? Sorry if that didn't make any sense lol...
thanks

sounds like they didn't sand the white enough for the black to adhere properly. Paint can be tricky, with primers and clear coats, and blah blah blah. It will continue to peel (most likely) even after another paint job is put on top of their first one. It's a tough battle. How much did they charge for the paint job? I ran into paint that peeled on a silver 1981 Camaro... as did tons of other GM owners!

It was a $499 paint job (17 step /shrug) + $50 per door jamb.

Whats the old saying?? You get what you pay for,,,if you take it back, I would bet money, they will not strip any old paint off,, This is what I would do,, if it was my car,, talk to the shop,, take off any part you dont want painted, remove the front bezels, windshield trim ect,, and I know you paid for a "quality" paint job,, I would take the car and have it soda blasted or buy your own soda blaster and have them prime it and shoot it again. I know alot of you are saying are U knutz?? But they are mainly hacks and they are some good painters at those shops, but a few,, ask yourself why didn`t the paint last?? Hacks,, What kind of shape is the body in?? If its straight I say blast it and shoot it again,, it will be 3 coats of crap-tack-u-lor paint if ya dont,, I may be off but thats what I would do,, I have learned in 30 plus years of cars,, you get what ya pay for,, matty man

As a restoration shop and custom paint and body shop owner, I can tell you that it is all in what you pay for. A good paint job is not cheap. There is a ton of labor involved and materials are not cheap either. A decent color change paint job with no body work should run around $1800. The shop should sand the old paint. Not sand it off, just sand it to give the primer a good surface to stick to. If mirrors are not getting painted and are easley removed, remove them. Nothing chrome should be painted. The paint WILL peal off. It MUST be sanded and primed if it is to be painted. Earl Scheib and Maaco are good if you just want to cover the ugly on your old work truck and you don't mind it peeling off in a year. Your best bet is to sand off all of the black your self and take it to a good paint shop and be ready to pay nearly $2000 for it. What ever you do, don't put more paint on top of that black. It will just peel off with the first black and cost you more money.

When you go to Earl Scheib, if you dont't want it painted, take it off, that includes the dirt. I'm suprised it stuck as long as it did. Why take it back for another crappy job?
I paid $3500 for my paint, that was a color change with minimum body work.:texas:

I used to have cars painted at Earl Scheib alot (not the same car) and alwasy found they did a decent job, granted it wasn't awesome but I knew that going in and I alwsy had the body work done and the car primered. and a few cars I actually seen a few years later and the paint still looked good. like 1978 Z28 that I had painted white, sold it and the guy had it for 2 1/2 years and then he sold it back to me when he wife wanted him to get rid of the toy. and the paint was still nice. my ElCamino was paionted by Maaco about a year ago now and iots still nice. but you do get what you pay for and I'm sure an $1800 paint would be very nice if you have the money which alot of people do. oh well just my 2 cents

Saxgod;
Go to any reputable automotive paint supplier, get a gallon of quality stripper, spend a few days taking ALL the paint off and start fresh.
I am in the process of doing that right now
1980 Elky Light Camel Metallic
1)original paint and primer
2) repainted with epoxy primer, base clear coat 3 yrs. ago...
3) numerous nicks and a teen age driver......!!!!!
4) 1 gallon stripper from PPG finished removing all the paint in 3 days (easy work)Plastic on the ground, let stripper and paint residue dry and pitch it.
5)purchased a stripping disc 4" from local supply house and went over entire body to remove any remaining paint ,rust crud and find low spots.....now working on minimal dents and dings.
Purchased Body filler, sandpaper, primer, base coat clear coat, thinner and paint activator...
$800.00 Have lined up a local shop that will rent me their booth for a week-end ,at least if its screwed-up I can blame myself .
just my 5cents..no change back!

As has already been stated. You get what you pay for. I've had the $499 Macco job and they did very minimal sanding if any. That basically is the difference between their different price levels. The amount of prep work they will do. Also with the cheapy one it is a low quality single stage paint.
I had my El Camino painted by a local street rod shop and the paint and materials alone coat almost twice what a complete Macco job costs. I took the Camino to the shop completely stripped so all they had to do was the finish sanding an a little body prep and it still cost me $2700 to have it sprayed and buffed out. And that was with the friend discount and me helping were ever I could.

I remember 25 years ago good ol Earl would paint any car any color for $59.95. Hell if you left the windows down they would do the inside for free lol

Well is a $4000.00 paint job (cheap)? Thats what I paid for mine and I let them keep it 6 weeks so they could work on it in there time frame (no rush) Now less than 2 years later I'm starting to see (little things I don't like)
I'll be going back by the shop later this month but $4000.00 aint cheap to me. I realize it's not the $10,000+ I was quoted at some shops. But $4000.00 aint cheap. (Did I say that already?)

$499 will barley cover paint and materials so I would expect it to peal no matter who did the work, however $4,000 should be a real decant job depending on prep & misc needed to be dun'
don't expect much for under $5,000 anymore..
