This is a two part question:
1. I want to know what edelbrock carb I can use on my 86. I want it to be four barrel square bore, like the 1406 model. But when I looked up the carb in the catalog it said it was for 81 or older. I talked to a carb repairman and he doesn't think that I could use anything but a quadra-junk due to the computer asist. Is this true?
2. Until I get a edelbrock or get the rochester(E4ME) rebuilt, How do I turn OFF the electric choke. I let that thing warm up for more than ten min. and I can not get it to regular idle without spiking the gas 20 times. What it does is go to fast idle (2200 rpm) then it kicks down to solied activated (650 rpm) but I it seems I can no longer get it to 500 rpm. My fuel economy has been out the window. And I want it it back

I believe that "Curb Idle" for that engine is 800 RPM. With the AC Active and the solonid engaged Curb Idle is probably between 900 and 1200 RPM, 1000 RPM is more like the target.
The only way you would be able to use something besides that factory carb or a exact replacement carb is to completely disconnect all the Computer stuff and make it like a 80 or eariler model. If you did that then I would think that you'd have some lights always on on the dash but I don't know for sure.
You could also steal the Computer and wiring off a 93 or newer Chevrolet truck with TBI nad use a Throttle Body injection on it, if you just want a computer controlled engine.

my chokie thermo. was busted too, it idled at bout 35, just un-hook the wire from it, it will run a little "frigid" after that, but if you let it warm up it will be fine.

You do not have many options. Rebuild the computer Quad or dump the computer.

Most "carb problems" turn out to be mis-diagnosis of the computer command control. Get a shop manual and a scan tool. Learn about how it works. It's really quite simple and better than non-ECM in my opinion.

well its nice to know that I have so many options open to me. Where exactely is the thermo switch. I tried un hooking some type of wire in the front on the passenger side, and it was still on fast idle and it wouldn't go down to normal idle.

well I finally got the carb looked at by an expert. he thinks I will need a rebuild and a new fast idle switch or something like that. Part of the problem was that the A/C solonied kept kicking on when i started the car;which is why the car wouldn't kick down to curb idle. So what he did was unhook the fast idle cord/switch or wire, and the a/c wire. And now the idle seems to working correctly. Now I have only two idle setting rather than three. When I get some money I might by edelbrock qua-dret replacement carb.

Go to a junkyard and look for a carb that hasn't been molested. Make sure the mixture plugs in the base are still there. If not, somebody who didn't know what they were doing has been messing with it.
305's are everywhere in the junkyards. Always good to have a spare. And get a book called "Rechester Carburetors" by Doug Roe.
