What is involved replacing the A/C vents in a 71 with the non SS dash? and also the transmission indicator does not move from park is this an easy fix?

Can't help you with the AC but the gear indicator on the column is a very simple mechanism. There is a doubled stainless braided cable going from the column to the gear indicator. It is anchored directly to the sleve on the shifter column. When you pull the shifter down it pulls the cable and the needle to the desired gear, when you put it back in park a spring returns the indicator to P....cable either broke or the bolt worked its way out.

Underneath the dash or behind it are air ducts which guide the air from the blower motor to the vents in the dash and the defroster. On my car these ducts are white, so I can see them rather easily. It takes a few screws to hold them in and they are rather easy to take out or reinstall.

I have been taking my interior apart to get my heater/ac controls to work, but to know avail :(. I hope this helped you.

Oops you meant vents. Well the vent on dash face plate is easy to remove. Remove the screws holding in the dash face plate and then remove the face plate from the dash. If you have already removed the air ducts then the face plate should come out easily. There are 2 screws holding the in face plate vent. Remove those screws and the vent should just pull out.

I am not sure if in dashboard vents are easier. But you'd probaly have to try and work your way up behind there to get them out.

I hope I got it right this time :-D

Well i tackled the AC vents on my 71 today. WHOA! major pain in the butt! Had to take the whole dash damn near completly off.

I finally got the two center vents out only to find the housings glued and rivited together!

Then the end vents another hour later i got them out only to find the housings on them the plastic was melted together.

Had to scrape and pry on them till i finally got them seperated. I would not reccomend doing this job to anyone...

Definatly a job worth paying someone to do.. (my two cents) wish i had done that!

Now if i can only get it back together

one question does anyone know the part numbers for the spring and cable for the shift indicator? or where i could get them.
