: Who all on here has a recall Toyota?
DONE DEAL DONNY 01-26-2010, 06:26 PM Just wondering how many of us on here have one of their defective autos.
The new 2005 Mustang we had kept having to go back to the dealer for repairs, the new 2007 Chevy Cobalt we had has less metal in it than a 6 pack of cokes and as much power as a push car. Now the new 2009 Toyota we have is a death trap.:dontknow:
Thank God for the El Camino!!!!!

ssr71 01-26-2010, 06:40 PM And they don't have a solution for it yet!
I never never never will buy a toyoduh, honduh, or any other foreign vehicle.
My Silverado's been rock solid for nearly 11 years so far. Before that I had a '93 Cutlass that got ripped up by a truck just shy of its 10 year b-day and it had a few faults, but nothing major.
Tuggy24g 01-26-2010, 06:55 PM I have to agree with everyone I have an old cutless that is 17 years old and runs better then ever. A little here and there maintenance that needs to be done but nothing big. I bet the crap out of it and it still drive great. I do not like the car, but it gets me around. So I am sticking with a ford or a chevy or GM car for sure!
elcamino74guy 01-26-2010, 08:01 PM I've heard that the 05 mustangs had a lot of issues but that was the first year of the redesign which is something I stay far away from. That's why I wouldn't touch an 2010 Camaro. I'd rather not pay to be a guinea pig for a car manufacturer.
On topic though, I'm not surprised about another recall from Toyota. I really don't believe they're any better than anyone else anymore. I've had 3 toyota trucks and they were all pretty reliable but I had issues with things like interior pieces falling off, broken speedo lenses and those were no newer than 1990.
My buddy has had two Nissans and is on his second tacoma TRD. He had a 2003 that had a recall for the front end (wheel could fall off) and his 2008 may be under the current recall for the gas pedal sticking.
rushgator 01-27-2010, 09:19 AM Regarding some of the previous recall issues, I'm not sure that it's 100% Toyota's fault. At least the part dealing with the floor mats hanging up under the pedals, which to me is not a mechanical fault. Most likely it's the fault of the owners not ever cleaning all the crap off the floors of their cars and the mats getting bunched up under the pedals. A little housekeeping would solve that. Unfortunately, in the land where everyone has a lawyer on speed dial, we have to make everything completely foolproof.
Of course, this latest recall has to do with (apparently) a throttle return issue, which is a design fault, and they're going to have to eat a lot of expense to fix that.
I've owned a '95 Lexus for nine years, and it's been the most trouble free car I've ever owned. It runs great, has plenty of power (4.0 V-8 RWD), and gets decent mileage. The only things that I have had to fix, other than routine maintenance, was a bad bearing in an idler pulley, and a broken drivers side window regulator. It's the only import in my stable, but I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.
dabayelco 01-27-2010, 09:54 AM I have a Toyota that's been recalled a couple times. It's the 2nd gen 4runner (1990-1995) and it's been recalled once for a headgasket cuz the 3.0L v6 loves to blow hg. And it's been recalled for a steering relay rod. I justgot my 4runner this past summer but I know it's been fixed cuz the previous owner has records for all The maintaince and Repairs since he bought it new. Despite those issues, it has over 220,000 miles and is running strong! The only major repair was a tranny swap 10k miles ago
Maintenceman 01-27-2010, 02:42 PM my dad and step mom have pretty much matching tundras, his 09 and hers 08, so i told em to make a date day and go hang out at the dealership. they looked at each other and planned seperate days to go up... my god CANT WAIT FOR MARRIAGE!!!
strkpr00 01-27-2010, 02:59 PM I bought a new carolla at the end of December. I havent even made a car payment yet. This car is for one of my young'ns away at college, I figured no headaches for 3 years and she would be out of school for a year by then. So much for planning
DONE DEAL DONNY 01-27-2010, 05:46 PM What happens if your driving a Toyota and the pedal stuck causing you to crash and kill someone else in another car. Could you be sued for driving a car with a known defect?

Maddening 01-27-2010, 06:16 PM I know we're all supposed to hate foreign cars and all, but I am pretty happy with my Subaru. In the same time I've had mine my friend's new Focus has had all kinds of problems, transmission wouldn't stay in gear and later not even go into gear, his exhaust manifold cracked, and electrical gremlins galore. My niece's new Cobalt was pretty awful too, wheel bearings and an engine that wouldn't run right, the dealer never figured out why it would sputter and shake when accelerating... she got rid of it after a year and got an Eclipse.
I wonder what is going on at Toyota, they had something about floor mat fires, and the accelerator sticking or even accelerating more on it's own has been plaguing them for years now it seems.
80 gmc caballero 01-27-2010, 07:29 PM Toyota's are great. every brand of car has had a recall. Just this is one of the first recall for them in a long time. Toyota has one of the best reps out there. Our Toyota is one of the best car we have ever had. ( Its not on the recall list.) but im glad they are fixing the problem before they sell any more of there cars that may have a problem. anyone else still would have sold it to you.

It is not the first in a long time. Toyota now has the highest recall rate of any car maker out there.
From an LA Times article
* Although the sudden acceleration issue erupted publicly only in recent months, it has been festering for nearly a decade. A computerized search of NHTSA records by The Times has found Toyota issued eight previous recalls related to unintended acceleration since 2000, more than any other automaker.
The article is an interesting read. Take it however you wish:

Well I can't get too upity with you. I've been recently told that Lexus is using GM parts for it's suspensions. Likely from Buick and Cadillac. The older ones were using GM trannys as well.
My Mustang has a Tremec 5 speed in it which seems to be the tranny of choice for most manuals in current manufacturers from any brand.
steelybill 01-28-2010, 04:40 AM I've owned only one off-shore vehicle, a 1971 Datsun (now called Nisan) pickup truck, that I bought new. Never had any problems with it, and it was really a tough little truck.
On the news this morning it was said that the recall on Toyotas was was up to 1.1 million cars.
I owned a Buick in the 80s that was "recall city":smileyb: Brakes, transmission ...etc.
My Chevy pickup should have been in a recall. I've had the rear end apart 5 times for seals and axle bearings, and when a seal goes to hell, the brake linings are soaked with gear lube, so the rear brakes have to be replaced, and never get a chance to wear out.
The *** cars may have some problems, but nothing compared to the British cars my son kept buying. They should have had a badge on them, like POS.
dabayelco 01-28-2010, 08:57 AM I don't see anything wrong with foriegn cars, some are built way better than American cars. My entire family drives a foriegn car to commute. My mom has a 96 Honda civic that we bought new and nowhas 196k miles and has never had anything major happen to it. My dad has a 93 civic and the biggest thing that happened to it was the module inside the distributor(I think) went bad. It was couple hundred bucks and hasn't had problems since. That one has 170k miles. And I drve a 90 Toyota 4runner with the 3.0l engine( possibly the worst designed engine ever by Toyota) and is pushing almost 220k miles! It's the orginal motor and had a tranny swap at 208k miles. It's been recalled for a headgasket and a steering rod that breaks. If a car can live 220k miles and still be running strong and look like new, then it sounds like quality

That doesn't surprise me. GM & Toyota have been cooperating for years on the development and manufacturing of components. Plus, several GM cars, dating back to the mid-80's Nova that was a rebdged Corolla, were made by Toyota.
As a side note, I have seen a few Lexus SC400's that have been turned into drag cars. When the power of the 4.0 V8 gets up past 450 hp (usually thru power adders such as turbos and superchargers), they have to upgrade the tranny. The transmission of choice? A GM TH350!
67elkybryan 01-28-2010, 04:50 PM I've owned a 90 an a 92 Honda Accord. Still have the 90 and the 92 I sold to a friend with 270,000+ miles on it and she is still driving it. It just turned 300,000. Those were hands down the best most reliable cars I have ever owned. But I think in the last five or so years that the playing field as leveled off a little more between the Japanese imports and the domestics. Don't know if the domestics have got better or the imports have got worse. But I wouldn't hesitate buying a domestic now. Can't say I would have said the same thing 10-15 years ago.
Hands down the worst car I ever owned was a 84 Pontiac Fiero. I bought it brand new and after owning it for just shy of 10 months got GM to buy it back. Only because I had documentation that in those 10 months it was only out of the shop for a total of 30 days. And it was not 30 consecutive days. I learned my lesson about buying a first year production car after that. I know a few people with later year Fiero's and they are very reliable cars. But unfortunately for Pontiac and the Fiero the 84 gave them such a bad rap they could never live it down.
MR.CHEVY 01-28-2010, 06:22 PM have only owned chevy"s since I was 20 and won"t drive anything else but hey thats just me....:dontknow:
steelybill 01-28-2010, 06:27 PM Worst car I ever bought new was a '66 Pontiac Tempest Sprint, with the 230 CI over-head cam 6. Nothing wrong with the engine, just everything else. The 4sp trans was a POS also, and the heater controls fell out on the floor, and the heater core soaked the carpet, the rear quarter window rubber strips kept falling off, and on & on ......and the rear suspension was lousy, and would start hopping up & down when heavy braking was used. Two years was all I could tolerate from that car. The warranty in those days was 4000 miles.

I've never met anyone who liked the OHC Pontiac 230. THey stuck it in Firebirds too. My mother owned the exact car you describe and she said the exact same thing.
The 250 that replaced it two years later was more reliable.

hahaha i hope thats a joke! wrecked for unknown reasons and all they have for sale is the accelerator cable! hmmmm:secret:
steelybill 01-29-2010, 12:15 PM That gas pedal issue is really gonna cost Toyota big bucks before it's over. Trouble is, it's not a new problem from what I hear, and has BEEN a problem for some time. I believe they are a really good car, but someone sure dropped the ball at the company, to let this get out of hand and not get addressed until it became a fiasco. I feel for the owners who don't really understand why Toyota can't get their act together. The position of a best selling car will go away, at least for a while.
One of my sons had a Toyota years ago, and the only thing I remember about it was that the parts were expensive, like Cadillac prices for a small car.
rushgator 01-29-2010, 12:52 PM One of my sons had a Toyota years ago, and the only thing I remember about it was that the parts were expensive, like Cadillac prices for a small car.
Very true for both Toyota & Lexus...case in point...1 drivers side window regulator= $160.00. If I had needed the power window motor as well (thank God I didn't), that would have been $600. And thats buying from a discount parts house that specializes in Toyota/Lexus. The dealer would have been 1/3 more! I always say that a Lexus hardly ever breaks, but when it does, it feels like you're paying for all the times it didn't break.
closer9 01-29-2010, 02:18 PM Well, I don't own one, but my boss and I had a new Corolla for a rental the last two days. I won't lie and say we didn't pucker a bit when first getting in it, but no issues in about 120 miles... I've owned 2 Nissans, 2 Hondas and a Mitsubishi, but only had any (several) problems with my 2010 Chevrolet, but I still like it...
