Thanks Much Boyz!

Your warm welcome means a great deal to us!

Quick question:

Are GM 7-1/2" & 7-5/8" ring and pinion gear sets the same animal?

In other words: Will a 3:73 , 7-5/8" ring and pinion gear set bolt into a 7-1/2", 10 bolt posi from another car?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Much Thanks!

I believe a 3:73 ratio requires a different carrier. I saw a post recently about it, I'll try and find it.

Go to the search function, enter 'posi rear', and look for the '5th gen suspension questions' thread.

Anything above 3.23 will require a type 3 carrier. If you have a type 2 carrier ( current gear ratio 3.23 or lower), you will need "Thick" ring gears, or a spacer. By the way 3.73 with a 3 speed auto will scream at highway speeds ( >3000RPM). You can get by with 3.42 nicely. Look over on MontecarloSS.com. They frequently have stock rears ends with 3.42 or 3.73 w/ posi available. They are a direct bolt in, and in my opinion easier to do a complete swap than a rear gear swap.

No. The 7.625" rear is a series 3 carrier. The 7.5" rear is a series 2 carrier.

Thanks much for the timely responses! This Forum Rocks! :You_Rock:

I am still awaiting delivery on the posi rear I purchased on E-Bay.

It is from an '84 Camaro - Z28. It originally had 3:73 gears, but not the ones that I purchased.Mine are 7.625"

Would this posi unit be a series 3?

Thanks once again for all your help!
