i have a 1981 el camino. it has a v6 3.8 with a 350 turbo trans. im swaping the engine to a 350 and im thinking of putting a 700 r trans but not sure if the 700 r trans would fit with out any modifactions. or does any body knows what are the modifactions that you have to do to installed a 700 r on a 1981 el camino. any sopport would be very helpful. thanks
you will need to change the cross member & install frame extensions on a 81 to mount it. all of this is easy to get & shorten your drive shaft. also need a shifter for a 4 sp. auto. i probably forgot something.so try a search i remember a few good post on this. good luck. or you could go for the 200r4. no need to shorten the d/shaft.
200R4 whats the diffrence from a 700 r is the 200r4 fits with no problem or what are modifacations.

The 700R4 is 5/8" shorter than a 350 with the medium length tail shaft housing (the 6" one) Maybe that 5/8" isnt a big issue (??)

Those two transmissions are very similar in their power handling capability when built right...the th2004r has better ratios for a torquey engine---The Grand national boys (I'm one of themnot in the tens yet but soon I hope)are taking the th2004r's into the 10s on a regular basis...........Dan

200r4 is much better then a 700r4! I would buy a fix up 200r4 any day of the week over a 700r4! Better gear ratio and they fit better in a lot of Gbody cars!
cool thanks for all the help. i decide to go with a 200r4 let see how that goes.

There are several kits out there for your 2004f to help make it bullet proof, it just depends on how much you want to spend. 2004r are light than 700's but if built right they are great trannies.
