I have a 71 Elk with a hi pro 350. I was having a problem with the alt. light in the dash staying on. I had the alt. rebuilt, replaced the volatge reg. Replaced both batt. cables(they needed it) replaced the batt.
That seemed fine for about 2 days. Then the alt. idiot light would be lit very dimmly when the E brake was on(went out when it was released). Today the engine started turning over slower & slower until it needed a jump to start. Then I noticed the back up lights were lit up when the key was on & it was not in reverse. I have a short somewhere I am assuming.
I HATE elec. problems & am not sure of where to start looking. Any ideas? Thanks, Mike

crawl underneath with a test light or a multimeter and test your wiring every few inches, if that is not desireable, run all new wires. Not good with elec. myself, but what you described is a basic short, and I would start testing at the E brake connection.
