Can someone help identify a part loacated on the crossmember that is behind the the one where the transmission mount is located ? It is on a bracket about three inches high. it is a 1 inch by 1 inch round black plastic piece that has two wires about 3 inches long coming out of it. Was wondering what it's function was or is supposed to be. It's a 79 Elk and I was cleaning the tranny tunnel prior to painting when i found it. It had a 267 with automatic trans in it.

Is it on a bracket? And does it line up with the drive shaft? It sounds like the magnetic pulse pickup coil for an after market cruise control.

Heck, I can't think of anything else it could be. Must be aftermarket.

Yup, thats what it is, identical to the magnetic pickup on my 1979. Is the magnet still on the driveshaft? Probably not if the wires on the pickup are disconnected.
