I have a 74 ELKY w/400 Cu. In. and if I let it sit with gas in the carborator it gums up the carb. I dont drive the car, just store it. What I want is a switch of some kind in the gas line near the carb so I can shut off the gas and let the carb run dry while idling. This also would help if someone tried to steal the car. I think there may be something near or in the gas tank that will do this, but would rather have it near the carb. Is this a good idea at all? JB

You should be able to find something at a hardware store. I have the same problem with my Boat sort of. I disconnect the gas line and run the engine until it shuts off from lack of fuel. That is what you should do with the engine on that Elky. AnyGas you have in the tank will also varnish and gum in the tank. You can use a stabelizer but runnung the truck out of gas is a better way than shutting off the fuel you save both the Carb & tank from varnishing and the tank doesn't collect as much trash and crap if its empty.

Just a thought.

I don't know if I would agree with storing a car with an empty gas tank. An empty gas tank will rust out because of condensation. If I were storing a vehicle for a year or less I think a good gas stabilizer (I use Stabil and have had good success) will work without draining the fuel system. If the storage is more than a year I would remove all gas and use an anticorrosion product on the inside of the fuel tank. You would probably have to remove the fuel tank.

Thanks for the advise. I use stabilizer in the tank and I crank the motor once in a while. I have thought about what to do with the car many times with almost as many different results. One idea, out of many, was to put in an LS1 motor. Then I say, "keep it stock". Has anyone heard about plastic gas tanks? Are they any good? If I ever go F.I. I will need a new tank. If I can get my financeses together and get rid of a few cars, I may fix it up for car shows. JB

For many years I would store my 79 Corvette throughout the winter months. Prior to storing it away I would put in the Stabil and fill the tank up. Filling the tank for the most part eliminates the corrosion issue and the stabilizer took care of the fuel. Once it was stored up for a year and after a few cranks it started up and continued to run well. I also would disconnect the battery hooking it up only long enough to turn the engine over on occasion. This worked for me and the motor continues to run well at 25 years of running and storage time........Good Luck.........Russell
