78 El Camino running 14" crager mags. Anybody know what is the biggest and baddest tire size I can go without jacking the car up?
Sounds like a easy question but I am hearing a lot of different answers.
One was that if I put on 17" the wheels and tires will pick up the truck enough by themselves for clearance and steering.
I am just an average fan but that does not seem to be quite right.

17" should be good with no lift at all. You'll just have to get a lower profile tire then what you've got now is all. Some guys are running 17" who can tell you what sizes tires they're running.

Well I have an 18.85 in wheel. Not sure tire size, but can tell you the bigger rim you go with the less tread you have.
Forgot to mention, backspace is 4.5" on mine.

I have recently purchased an 83 it came with 14" rally wheels and the tires are 215/70 R 14's... I am in the middle of changing the T350 to a 700 r4...I really didn't want to buy rims at the same time I'm throwing handfuls of 100's at the tranny. Help! Perhaps I could live with the 14's if I could buy the tires bigger for now. If I were going to change rims...I wouldn't go over 15" anyway. Thoughts?

Greetings!
I run a 235/60x15 on 8" S10 alloy wheels all around. The diameter is the same as stock so no issues with the speedometer. Here is a nice tire size comparison site. It has a great side by side visual to allow you to see how things might look.

yeast1...I knew about the S10 compatable wheels...I can't seem to find any. The choices on rims-n-tires is pretty limited and I would like to do something fairly quick as the car is almost ready to drive with the new 700r4. I can't wait to try it out but the old dry rot 14's can't be trusted. Thoughts?
BTW...I'm having the T350 replaced with the 700r4 for 1200.00. The 700r4 was rebuilt before my eyes for 400hp. I'm hoping my 99 camaro 305-HO can pull it. Soon, I'll probably have to throw more hundreds at that too.

Sandman.....not to fret.
Where in Texas are you at? The reason that I ask is that I have a set of the original 14" Rally wheels with center caps and a good set of tires mounted on them. I also have a set of S10 wheels with almost new 15" tires mounted. I can't use both sets....(even a New Mexican like me figured that out). If you are anywhere close, I would sell either set and drive to meet you and do the deal. I can post some photos if you want.
