: don't touch my car!!
skssrat 04-06-2010, 04:47 PM Having the day off today i took the time to look at a few of the previous posts at this site. One of the ones that stuck out most for me was when someone was saying they would take a baseball bat to anyone that touched their car at a car show, (to paraphrase) and in all fairness to that person I'm sure what they said was a tounge in cheek, comment. But, it did get me to thinking........
I have a 3rd gen. elky that I show, race and use as a daily driver. I really do think it's one of the nicest cars I've ever owned. From the 454 under the hood, the cowl induction, and the horse shoe shifter inside, everyday when i get into it I feel like I've been "overhauled". I can't belive its mine and I get to drive it. I work for an auto auction and drive just about everything out there so to me that says a lot. As you can tell this car means the world to me and that brings me to my point.......
I've done my fair share of car shows and at times I've handed over the keys to someone at a car show to let them start it just so they could sit in it and experience something that will happen just that once in thier lifetimes. I let kids climb in an out of and sit behind the stearing wheel and plant that seed, because I want a new gerneration to grow up and love the idea of car they can build/save a car at some point in their lives. Something they can share with others as I do mine.
Yeast1 04-06-2010, 05:00 PM Nicely done Sir!
On a somewhat similar note......I have had the chance to drive lots of very nice muscle cars and luxury cars when the keys were given to me by drunk friends. I usually end up the designated driver and it does have its percs! Stay sober and hang with drinking friends with nice cars....LOL

Maddening 04-06-2010, 05:28 PM I have experience in this area, you mentioned you searched, so you might have read it, I think I posted it before on this site, not sure. :confused2:
I took my El to a car show about 5 years ago where they shut down the main street and cars back up to the sidewalk on both sides making a nice little car show area for us. Well I backed into my spot, my buddy and I walked down 3-4 blocks past the car show to get some burgers and beers at the awesome local burger dive.
Walking back about an hour later I see a group of punk ass gangsta wannabe's assembled behind my car. Two of them are leaning on my tailgate! So I'm still almost a block away, I yell "GET OFF MY CAR!". Some people at the show are like, so I know my voice carried very well! But the punk asses don't seem to notice, or just don't care. I get closer and I yell again "GET OFF THE EL CAMINO!" One of them does, but the other kid wants to act all tough in front of the females... maybe he told them it was his car or something. Anyhoo... I'm normally a nice dude, but something snapped.
:crazy::asthanos::cussing:
"GET YOUR BLANKETY BLANKING BLANK A$$ OFF MY CAR YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF BLANKETY BLANK!" I said this as I'm running towards the now scared out of his mind kid. I'm a big dude, running at an impressive full speed for my size... the kid who was acting tough is now all like :Eyecrazy::baby: I got in his face inches away and asked him if he was deaf, dumb or stupid, or all three... his friends are laughing their asses off at him and he starts mouthing off about how he didn't hurt the car, why should it matter, I argued back about respect and courtesy and how one day he might understand, but I doubt it. Some other stuff was said, we :argue: for a bit, he eventually just blew me off and walked over to join his buddies.
I restrained from throttling him, or even touching him, but just barely. Everyone else at the car show was looking at me like :lookround: and I almost expected them to :hail: but yeah... that's the closest I've come to beating a little punk ass kid to try to teach him respect. My car isn't that great, it's an older unrestored survivor, it shows it's age, it'll never win a show, or even come close... but that doesn't mean you can lean on it!
:let_it_all_out:
FIRST ELKY 4 ME 04-06-2010, 05:36 PM I surprise a lot of parents at car shows when I tell them their child can sit in my cars, one guy asked me if it was really my car or was I pulling his leg? They're just cars after all.
DONE DEAL DONNY 04-06-2010, 05:38 PM I've never gave my keys over but I've let lots of people sit inside so they could get their picture took. If felt good watching them get pleasure from it!!!
On another story, I had a guy, a childrens doctor (can't think of what it's called) anyways he was next to me at last years Heights car show (the one this weekend) he offered people to get in, start up, and even rev. his 2008? Viper. This car had everything money could buy done to it. Alsum!!!!
Kids, old ladies, and I think he'd let the homeless do it, he didn't care, he just got a big kick out of watching people. I couldn't do it with mine and his was worth 10 times as much. He wanted me to get in but I told him (if I get in I won't be coming back, hope you enjoy your Yellow El Camino:nanawrench:)
So I expect to see him there again this year. We ran across each other a couple of times last year.
So for those of you coming this weekend I'll offer a (sit and rev in his super bad Viper)
He loved it!!!

358L-CO 04-06-2010, 06:15 PM I mean its just common courtesy and respect for others stuff.. Its one thing to have someone want to be interested in the elkie world down the line but to just lean on the car for no reason.. You don do it
samjudi 04-06-2010, 06:26 PM Offering a "Sit" is one thing. Leaning, crowding, lounging on someone else's car is a totally different animal (more ways than one). Too many today have no respect for others. Guess I am getting to be the Old F**T I used to complain about.
Also, it is one thing if you build it, and another completely if your just buy it. Wish I could get my wife to understand that. She thinks I have skipped the Mid-Life Crisis and gone straight to my 2nd childhood with my 84 T-6 Elky.
Guess I can put a matress in the bed......
DONE DEAL DONNY 04-06-2010, 06:37 PM It's also a matter of how they treat it, most people know not to touch but when they do their very careful, then you have those butt-heads that have no respect for themselfs or others.:dontknow:

Anyway I am not sure if you know or not, but we are having an EL Camino meet in Carlisle pa June 25-27 2010. YOur El Camino does not have to be show quality to enter the show. All we care about is that you took the trip down to the show.
Also we would really appreciate it if you could preregister ASAP for Carlisle pa show if you decide to go. Doing so helps with setting up classes, help get up a bigger parking spot and helps promote the organization.

elcamino74guy 04-06-2010, 07:26 PM I'm pretty even tempered but there are those who have no respect for themselves and by extension for you or your property. It's not like you have to station armed guards around it but somebody who comes along, drops your tailgate and makes it a park bench is going a bit too far. Some kid's $30 jeans with rivets on the pockets who seems to have a problem standing upright and therefore feels the need to lean on your car's 20K paint job needs correction as well.
I don't know that I'd have yelled across the parking lot but if I got lip from the kid(s) then yeah it's going to be a life lesson for them.

DONE DEAL DONNY 04-06-2010, 08:16 PM When I first started in the A/C business the owner of the company took me and my wife to Cruzin The Coast week long event, He rented a beach house with a cottage in the back for us. My whole purpose there was to clean and be security for his 57 Chevy conv. and 68 Vette, He paid me a weeks salary, bought the food, paid for the lodging, and you can beleive no one came within 6' of his rides.
He gave me a chance to learn everything I know about A/C and showed me how to (car show)
Sure miss that man (died from cancer not 5 years after making his first million.

Pro Street Garry 04-06-2010, 08:44 PM That is a great story hopfuly it will say in there minds forever! :You_Rock:
Marv D 04-06-2010, 09:35 PM Those of you that don't understand.. let me add this perspective. My 67 spent 11 months in primer prison. Cost me $9750 cash not counting the sheetmetal I bought because the imported CRAP pieces we bought from YearOne was not even close, + I built a small block for him (TFS heads he had, custom hydraulic roller, I spent around $1800 out of my pocket on it)
I catch some dipwad with brass rivets in his blue jeans leaning on my Camino,, were gonna have problems. I'm old, have had 2 back surgerys, have a bad temper and I don't fight fair. But I do carry a little something to convince you incase you don't want to show your elders respect and listen the first time.

El Diablo 04-07-2010, 04:30 AM Just leave the empty holster on the dash, gets the point across.
LeoC2 04-07-2010, 06:44 AM I put up signs not to touch the car and I enforce them. Anyone who touches is politely asked not to, if a child does so I tell them not to touch and then tell the parent to please watch the kids. Everyone I know at shows does this otherwise you'd have finger and hand prints all over the car.
Tuggy24g 04-07-2010, 07:01 AM Well for me I usually do not care. I might put a sign that say "do not touch". Most of the time if someone does touch it I just wipe to finger print off and go back to what I was doing. If a kid does it I do not care. I know he does not know what he is doing so I could care less. Around here people are good with not touching cars so most times I do not have a problem with that sort of thing happening.
Marv D 04-07-2010, 08:16 AM Just out of curiousity, how many of you have used that little static cling decal that comes in every Summit shipment .

nitroxracer78 04-07-2010, 10:55 AM My car isn't much, it's a survivor with some dents and scratches, but that doesn't mean it's not like my baby. I wouldn't mind letting someone sit in it if they asked nicely.
theelcaminofactory 04-07-2010, 11:04 AM I mean its just common courtesy and respect for others stuff.. Unfortunately it seems alot of people these days are lacking these attributes...along with common sense! I won't even get within two feet of someones car for fear of a coat zipper or metal button or whatever coming in contact with their car, unless the owner OKs it first. "DON"T TOUCH THE CAR" means just that, and the owner of a car doesn't need to be present for me to respect what's his!
Cargasm 04-07-2010, 12:14 PM Reminds me of the time I went to subway I was the only person there only car parked infront. got my grinder went out to the car and what do I see? One of the guys that works there leaning against my quarter panel talking on the phone. A whole parking lot.. not to mention subway full of places to sit and there he is leaning against a paying customers classic car talking on the phone. :let_it_all_out:So I tell him to get off my car and he just gives me this blank look.. dont think he even understood english.. but he could tell I wasnt happy. then slowly he pushes off my car to stand up I get in look behind me.. there he is.. slowly and I mean ssllooooowwwly walking BEHIND the car while im trying to leave. I was very tempted to just push him out of the way with my bumper. and on top of that the grinder was terrible.

This works too! But make sure it's your .45 holster and not your wife's pea shooter! (sorry for explict version)
skinyfisher 04-07-2010, 02:38 PM I Have a real bad atitude about "Stupid" some one that is obviously just looking and is carried away and touches something is asked not to with a nice explantion of why. Your being a jurk and messing around or leaning with food, handbag, cell phone on belt, massive key chains and such you get yelled at. If your stupid enough to offend a car owner, make a bad come back at one of the car owners in our area you got way to many guys in your face real quick. There have been more than one guy taken off the show area, and several kids and young adults told to leave with bikes and skate boards. I watch my car as best I can but enjoy the shows, buddies are always looking, but at one show friends and I walked out of the resturant and there laying on my front quarter is a young bikini clad teenager with her mother taking pictures, the tempers went into orbit with the mother kicking the tire as hard as mother elephant could when she was told what her coments where going to get her. She had at least 30 people yellng at her and her young one left in a hurry and came back with the Pier Police. When the first lie came out and the second lie started an undercover cop stepped in and flashed a badge told the lady he was there when it all went down and one more word and he was going to ask the owner to press charges for property damage and slander in public, security and the city cop told her to leave the grounds now with no additional words. JUSTICE
I do several childrens Hospital show and ASL and we go out of our way to show our cars with owners doing the internal showing always and giving rides sometimes.
So I guess it all depends on how your car is touched????????
Maddening 04-07-2010, 02:42 PM This works too! But make sure it's your .45 holster and not your wife's pee shooter!

I had some co-workers do this at the last place I worked. I backed into my spot with my GN and behind it is where the electrical junction box for the security fence card readers is located. They were upgrading something in that box one day, I looked out and the guys had their tools laid on the roof of my car, right on the T-Top glass! I went down there as soon as I could get away from my desk, but there weren't any tools laying there by then. I told the guys I had seen the tools on my roof and asked them to please not put any tools on the car, that it is kinda a rare classic car and all that. I wasn't that angry, until they claimed they hadn't put anything on the car. I almost snapped again, but I managed to remain calm, it wasn't a big deal really, but to lie about it... man! My GN is much nicer then my El, so I don't know how I managed to remain calm this time. Probably because smacking co-workers upside the head is frowned upon. :poke:
Maintenceman 04-07-2010, 02:58 PM my cruck isnt much at all but its still mine, no i dont care because i have a $120 worth of paint and supplies i sprayed on it and the fact that at least once a month ill scratch it myself loading tree limbs or unloading a toolbox from the bed. if people wanna sit in the bed and drink beer i dont mind, touch what u want but dont unhook vacuum hoses(damn kid got me one time doing that...couldnt figure out why it was idling at 1500rpms...) :beer:just be sure to throw the empties in the bed!

fixitman,, a casual touch, a fingerprint of someone admiring your work, a mishap from a child with an icecream cone,, even an elderly / someone that has lost their balance and breaks a mirror off trying to keep themselves from a disasterous fall, ,, there are totally understandable 'accidents' and although it could be quite upsetting,, I'm sure we all could understand as accidents happen.
Where disrespect for a persons pride and joy is flaunted,, THEN your gonna see a LOT of pissed off car owners looking to send someones huevos to 'overhauling' heaven http://small-block-chevy.com/images/smiles/nutkick.gif

Two things come to mind.
First, just because someone's old doesn't mean they're nice. If a senior citizen blows away his neighbor because the music's too loud he's still going to jail. Most seniors I've met are very respectful and appreciate the fact that someone else cares for a vintage car as much as they did back when it was new. I think it makes them feel like their times actually mattered to someone.
Second, you can do what you want with your ride but you have to make it clear that you're not a doormat. It doesn't matter if your elky is in primer or is being held together with bondo and bailing wire. If you don't show respect for your ride nobody else will either. Otherwise you can dump all the time and money you want in it and it'll still be treated like junk by everyone else.
Second and 1/2, You're at a car show which should give most people a reasonable idea of how they should conduct themselves. If you go to an art show you don't get to fingerpaint on top of the Mona Lisa and if you go to the Betsy Ross house you don't get to blow your nose in the flag. A fingerprint or two is one thing, someone's rear-end is quite another.
Yeah, it's really that important otherwise why bother...

MR.CHEVY 04-08-2010, 04:43 PM dont get me started on rude people at shows who reply its only a car!!!!!!!!! but what gets my goat the most is on the way to shows people tailgating me ,like are they fricken serious . when they do that I just take my foot off the gas and let it coast to about 15 mph. they usually pull out and pass me. with me hoping they got the message. do ya think?:dontknow:
skssrat 04-08-2010, 07:39 PM Wow!!! Thank you all for your comments.:You_Rock: I've enjoyed them all along with your own personal experinces. I do understand both sides of the issue. You don't want a 20 something hot looking babe leaning against your Elky no matter how great her butt looks in those jeans with copper rivits after you just spent a yr or more getting the perfect paint job on it. Plus, some people are just stupid and we all deal that in every factet of our lives. Still, we are all"the keeper of the flame" and sometimes we all forget that. Someday I'd like to see an elky worth more than a Chevelle just because we are more passionite about our rides and don't have our noses stuck in the air all the time.
caminoguy1 04-09-2010, 08:29 AM This is great stuff! First off, a guy who's 85 yrs. old should know NOT to touch! Kinda like when I was a kid and dad would say "keep your hands in your pockets", it's not a big deal it's respect for others stuff. I worked on the body and paint work on dads 'Camino for about a year and told him to jump on ANYONE who touches the car! It's amazing how many STUPID people walk among us! Rubbing your finger on my car 'cuz it looks "smooth" is enough to get it broken! He's jumped on more than a few people for touching and most are embarassed they got caught! Yes, paint jobs and cars can get fixed. Then again so can people, that's what hospitals are for! NOBODY on this forum should ever justify touching anybodys car! archerm3 04-09-2010, 12:09 PM I can't believe some of you are seriously suggesting...that you would BRANDISH a firearm for someone touching or even keying your car...because you will most certainly end up in jail at the minimum if the "toucher" pressed charges..
And to think that anyone would take a mans life over a $20,000 car? Get real. Or go to jail...
Now, you can't hit punkazz kids...but I suppose maybe you could tear their clothes off their back..maybe? maybe?

AMEN!! And as far as "Brandishing" a gun, just because we carry one and would show it to scare some punk doesn't mean we would use it. The problem with younger people these days is they have no respect because "the law" decided parents couldn't discipline their kids like in the old days. Adults who got paddled as kids wouldn't dream of doing something wrong. But younger kids and their "time outs" have no respect because they had no consequences for their actions. Now can I get an amen as well??? :nanawoot:

Luckys78Elky 04-10-2010, 06:22 PM I remember a long time ago when I had my first elky, it was a 79 and not perfect but I had one bad motor in it and everything else mechanically was right only a few rust spots in front of the rear wheels. I was cruising the back roads and a couple of kids thought it would be fun to hit passing cars with huge water balloons and when I drove by they just happened to hit where the rust was and knocked a HUGE hole in the side of my elky. The ensuing "u-turn" was quite dukes of hazzard like and Bo and Luke would've been proud. Anyway, when I got to the kids house and talked to the parents, all they could say was "sorry, kids will be kids and the rust was already there". Personally I know the rust was already there but now I have this huge gaping hole in the side of my car! These are the people who should be drug out in the street and pelted with rotten fruit I say! Before the incident the car at least looked decent, after not so much...
samjudi 04-11-2010, 04:43 AM Those parents are likely now sitting around trying to figure out what went wrong with their "darling little kids", and why the are(pick one):
In jail
On drugs
Living at home at 35,
etc.
Sorry, I must be getting to be one of the Old Far*s that I used to hate. My parents would have made me pay(something), rust or not, and then warmed my rear end, and it was not abuse.
I'm pretty well adjusted(or so it seems), so I was not too badly scarred.
So much for my Soap Box, just have a problem with parents who do not want to "restrict their kids developement".
Sam
regalt87 04-11-2010, 06:45 AM I am at the Turkey rod run in a shopping plaza with 500 other classic cars. So many people and cars they were double parked every where and you had to idle to keep from hitting one of the hundreds of people there loooking at the cars.
These three kids on bikes were weaving in and around people and cars at top speed. 20 plus mph. and one decides to ride a wheelie and lost it and hit my drivers door. The window was down and just as he hit I reached out and caught his front tire and minimized the impact. I worked on this car for 13 years, guide coated and block sanded (3 rounds) a couple thousand dollars of materials. 80 hours just sanding and buffing the clear after it was painted. It took all I cound do to not beat the living dog crap out of that kid. There were 50 who saw it and they all were surprised I didn't do it.
Luckys78Elky 04-11-2010, 01:22 PM He'd have been dead.... I'd give him CPR or whatever it took to save him then.... BAM! dead...:2gunsfiring:

Spend a bunch of money and countless hours working to get your car perfect and then let me come along and "accidentally" run into it with a bicycle or a shopping cart and see how much you just don't care..... :poke:The whole point of this thread is about how there is a lack of respect for others property. Your comment is like saying if you don't want your beautiful wife to get nailed by some other guy against her will then just keep her home... Can I get an Amen?
skinyfisher 04-11-2010, 06:29 PM MAKING A COMMENT ON SOME OF THESE STATMENTS, WOULD BE A WASTE OF WORDS. It also would start a disagreement ya, THINK
DONE DEAL DONNY 04-11-2010, 07:01 PM The bottom line is (Don't touch whats not yours)

americanhandy 04-11-2010, 08:03 PM I have had several cars that I showed some fairley big buck cars and I have no problem leting someone sit in my ride, the problem arises when someone (and not always a youngster) wants to touch the paint I gust spent hours making shine or leaning through the window or over the fender, usually becouse these morons have a large belt buckle or keys hanging from there belt loop, have come real close to breaking someones arm for there stupidity, I also watch cars next to me for ignarant people when the owner is absent.
Don't know about your area but around hear it seams like the good old boys are the champions of ignorance they believe ther age intitles them to paw someoneelses property have yelled at more old timers than youngsters. by the way I am 52 and respect anouthers property "I don't paw at your wife so don't paw at my car"

skssrat 04-11-2010, 08:04 PM The whole point of this tread has nothing to do with either the lack repect some people show for show cars or cars in general but, how we should present ourselves as elky owners. Some perfer to be hard asses and for good reason I might add. I just like sharing my car with others and a dent or a scratch goes along with my ideals.

you can touch the wife "but not the CAR" Amen
regalt87 04-14-2010, 08:45 AM Out of respect to other show car owners. If I am having a smoke ( I know bad habit ) I stay away from the cars so that no ashes even blow in them let alone the smoke. Sad that you have to post a sign "Please Dont Toutch" People should know that already.

I totally would have beat the crap out of him, threw the bike at his head and :snipersmilie:
El chica 04-15-2010, 04:49 PM One time i was backing my truck into a spot at the local car show, i had the last spot on the end of the row and i was about 3feet from this Malibu wagon thing (looks like a 78-79 elky wagon) any ways the guy got up from his chair and told me to move my truck at least 5 feet from his car, maybe he was worried i would ding his door but seriously im more worried about what would happen to my door, anyways i didn't argue and i ended up parked with half my truck in the road (they had the road blocked off) still made me nervous as hell.
:secret:
skssrat 04-15-2010, 06:47 PM Bike riders don't bother me unless they are wearing that gay looking helment and the spandex. All dressed up like they are in the tour de france or something. They think they own the road. It would almost be worth it to put a few dents in the SS just to run them off the road.:driving:
