Guess I'll break in with a introduction.

My name is Alan and I'm an Elkyholic. Loved them forever but never got around to owning one though I've owned just about everything else.

I just bought an '84 Cabalerro. Now it has some oddities about it. It seems to have original paint though it has had substantial spray can touch up and is faded big time. It has a Diablo emblem on the severly cracked dash, I'm thinking someone might have put it there though since the RPO codes don't seem to be what they should be from what I've found out by searching the archives . The truck does have a front spoiler, 2 tone paint with no body moldings and a pinstripe seperating the 2 colors.

Something that is different is the data plate says Laquer. Anyone elses say that? 84 seems a bit late for laquer paint so I guess it special order? (set me straight if I'm wrong) Odd for a car that barely has any options. No bucket seats, no full gauges, just AM/FM, A/C, PS, PB.

My father had a Diablo (Caballero) new in 80 that had Caballero emblem on the dash. He also chose not to add the "gaudy" stickers, they sat in the attic forever and have since disappered. His was loaded to the hilt with ALL the options except C/B or 8 track. Oddly enough his came with side trim and hubcaps. Something I thought they weren't supposed to have from the factory (those were immediatly traded for a set of 79 Pontiac factory wires). 8O

Well, I've rambled on enough.

See Ya,
Alan

Thanks all for the hearty Welcome :-D

No sticker in the glovebox, here's a pic of the dataplate. See if you come up as the same as me, I'm no expert on regular GM dataplates (I know my mid-year Vettes though :) ) . I still think it's odd for Lacquer in '84.

First Welcome aboard! Good to have another member.

Its not uncommon at all for that year model to have Lacquer type Paint. BC/CC didn't really get going during the 80's except on high end cars. I believe that the 90's was when GM started switching their guns and buying the newer finishes. I have an 86Z that also has lacquer type paint on it.

A "Full Face" dash cap is the cheapest way to fix the dash and still have it look moderately original.

I wasn't sure about that paint, Thanks. :-D

Beat ya to the punch as I already have a full face dash cap on order. Started stripping chrome yesterday as well as checking on prices 15 x 8 Rally wheels, my goal is to have a VERY presentable daily driver by the end of April.

Anyone else out there running 15x8's? What size rubber are your Elky's wearing? I'm hoping 245 60's aren't too much, shouldn't be.

My next big task is to find what someone did with the A/C power wire, it's hidden somewhere in the engine compartment. :(

Welcome to ECC/NECOA!

Watch the backspacing on your rims. There are several threads and articles on what size tire and rim will fit a 5th gen. Use the ECC Search (http://elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=search) to read up on it before you buy something that won't fit. I have 15x7 with 235/60/15 BFG Radial T/A.
