I can understand why imports have such lame names. They always have. I can picture some Japanese automotive executives sitting around a big table going “this is a great car. What did we call last years model? Someone speaks up and says the CX-8. The guy in charge of the meeting says, okay we’ll call this one the CX-9”. Meeting adjourned”. But, for the life of me I don’t understand what happened to the American auto industry? (Well, I do and I’ll get to that shortly). What the hell happed to names like, “The Judge, Eliminator, Maverick, Dart, Firebird, Twister, Super Sport, Tempest, Javelin, Cutlass, and Bonneville”? Don’t misunderstand me. I don’t want to see any of these names be brought back. That’s been tried and mostly with disappointing results. You can’t re-badge a car like GM has tried to do twice now with the GTO and expect it to sell. You can’t put decals and wing on a four door car and try and pass it off as a “Daytona Charger”, you can’t change the interior trim on a car and call it an “SS”. In case the car companies haven’t noticed the 60’s and 70’s are over and the Beatles aren’t getting back together anytime soon. The days of Goat, Roadrunner, and the SS are long gone. There is a new generation of car buyers out there now. Us old bastards are more than content to buy the car we always wanted to own when we were in high school off of e-bay. Not the show room floor.

I used to really be annoyed at the Corvette evolution. When it hit 1984 (Orwell anyone?), I quit looking at them. My wife bought a C6 generation a couple of years ago and now I have had to change my mind. From a 1966 model to a C6 generation is a huge jump. They aren't even close to the same feeling.....but I like the new ones and don't mind the same name useage.

Well I know what happened to some of the names. GM shut Pontiac and Oldsmobile down. The pickings are getting slim these days. That's why I intend to keep working on and driving my older cars. Don't get me wrong. The LS series of engines are impressive. And in a few more years they will be pretty cheap to swap in to the older cars. Then I can drive them another 30 years.

The car industry is just like music,, they can't come up with a creative thought of their own,, so they try 're-makes' in hopes will remember what a cool car it 'WAS' and throw down $30k+ to re-capture our youth.
Remember,, not all men are created equal. There are a ton out there who couldn't find a spark plug if you gave them a picture and opened the hood for them. WE are the lucky ones who recognized that mechanical things are COOL! and took an interest.
