hey folks!
heres my ride: 85 el camino SS

or, i THINK its an SS, heres the scoop: So there i was, showing off my elky to my friend in the mall parking lot late at night, when this security guard drives up. Apparently, hes into el caminos too, and was asking me questions. well im a newbie at this... so i couldnt really answer him. I told him its a 85 SS. He asked what size engine i have in it.. hell i didnt know! v8, 3something... and then he told me its NOT an SS! It says "super sport" on the little button on the dash, and i am 100% certain the previous owners did not place that there for looks, much like a kid would put type-r on their geo metro. So what is it? he says its not SS, im almost certain it is, and since i dont know much about it anyways, i dont know what to think now :? Ive been researching this for the past hour or so, and i cant find anything... so i finally decided to sign up here and ask some pros :D What exactly makes it SS? How can i tell what size engine i have?

thanks for your help

under neith the hood on the driver side on the fire wall there is a trim plate. if you have an SS it should have the RPO code Z15 on that plate.

If its an 85 SS or non-SS and has the factory V8 its a 305 V8 with something like 145 to 165 Hp. (LG4). The RPO is Z15 which basically added two tone paint and a decal set maby factory gauges and maybe bucket seats etc... If you scored really big you captured a Choo Choo SS, do you know if you have a Choo Choo Custom El Camino or not? (Aero front end)

Anyway Welcome to ECC/NECOA We're glad that you found us no matter the reason.

Use the ECC Search (http://www.elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=search)function and search for Z15. There is lots of info here on how to tell if your 85 is really an SS.

actually the choo choos have the Monte Carlo SS front end. Well, not quite. While they're similar in appearance, they're not interchangeable. Just a little fun fact.

I think that all SS model Elkys had two tone paint job (5th generation anyway) so that is a good clue if the finish is original.

When you said 3.. something he must be thinking of the engine as a 402 and not a 396 like they were called.
