: 1981 el camino sub boxes ideas.....
Unreal_Drunk 03-20-2004, 06:07 PM Hi, i have a 1981 el camino and im just started puting in the sound system and i bought a 15'' MA Audio and i cannot find a sub box for the space behind the seats or in the spare tire area...all i know is that it will cost me 200 bucks at least for a custom box...if someone has made a "wedge sub box" for a el camino befor i would like to know how to do so and anything else
greywolf 03-22-2004, 09:07 PM Have not done it for the El Camino, but from other jobs I have done, it's easy enough to make a few measurements, mock it up in cardboard from an old box, then cut wood peices to fit. A wedge should fit the smugglers box real fine.
acauth1 03-22-2004, 10:17 PM This isn't a box, but it works rather well.

PS, the vents are for the rear a/c unit.
Steve84Ec 03-24-2004, 07:03 PM I really like that set up a lot. If i ever decide to add subs, i will probably try building a wall like that. One thing, do you still carry a spare? and if so, i'm figuring it has to be in the bed, right?
acauth1 03-24-2004, 08:22 PM No, I do not carry a spare, never really drive it far enough away from my shop or home to be necessary.
Alchemist 03-25-2004, 04:06 AM Very, VERY sweet acauth1!!!!!! http://www.corvetteforum.net/c4/alchemist/thumb.gif Are there any enclosures behind the subs? or are the open air?
acauth1 03-25-2004, 07:41 AM All open.
Mrapii 03-25-2004, 02:32 PM Robert those speaker enclosures look terrific. I admire your precision workmanship!. But tell us about that rear AC--how does it work and why did you install it?
acauth1 03-25-2004, 02:40 PM The rear unit actually a rear van under seat unit that taps in to the front unit. It is a self contained evaporator/blower assembly with ducts running up to the top of the rear cabin.
Mrapii 03-25-2004, 03:12 PM Something tells me this rear AC is an overkill! But I love overkill, what a great exercise in over-engineering. I bet you can make ice cubes in your glovebox even on the hottest Texas day.
acauth1 03-25-2004, 04:08 PM It may be overkill, but I really like frosted windows during the summer, and I am the envy of anyone sitting next to me at a traffic light. Aside from that, it's great advertising.
Mrapii 03-25-2004, 04:53 PM Very interesting. Did you have to install a larger AC cpmpressor and/or condenser? How do you control the fan speeds? a separate switch? Did you insulate the storage box? The air intake, separate hose or just the air that gets past the enclosure? What is the refrigerant capacity now?
acauth1 03-25-2004, 05:08 PM Compresser is the one that came on the corvette LT1. Condensor is a parallel flow, a little larger that the stock one. Since the unit has it's own blower motor, it also has a seperate three speed control switch. The storage box is insulated. The return air vents are not pictured here. Takes about an addition pound and a half.
Mrapii 03-25-2004, 06:03 PM Thanks. This gets me thinking.
acauth1 03-25-2004, 06:09 PM Anytime.
WINGMAN 04-02-2004, 04:28 PM New guy from colorado here. About subs, I have 10's in truck boxes. They just barely fit. I havent hooked them up yet, though. I want to mount the amp on the wall behind the seat, but, I dont know if there is space in between the inside wall and and the bed.(dont want to drill holes through to the outside of the car).If someone knows for sure, the info would be appreciated.BTW, I bought the boxes pre-made at a stereo shop. :)
It looks great and i love the Rear A/C but i bet gas is a real killer for you, my 85 elky EATS gas with the A/C off and windows down.
Mrapii 04-08-2004, 10:23 PM Actually at highway speeds having the AC on and the windows up will probably net you better fuel mileage than the AC off and windows down. It's the aerodynamics.
steven 04-09-2004, 01:36 AM The only thing I can think that you did with the enclosures for the subs is an L shape to fit into the spare tire compartment. Thats what Im doing right now. They look like 10's The recomended inside cu\ft of space for 10s is 1.25 to 1.50 sq\ft. Your craftmanship is great. Looks like its supposed to be there. I am amazed at your ac knowledge, although I live in Minnesota, no need for ac. I like to be warm when I can. Most of the time Im living in the ice age, or so it seems. Again, great job on the modification. :-P
78 Elky 04-09-2004, 04:49 PM How about this?

A lot of speakers (http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/549650)
WINGMAN 04-14-2004, 01:22 PM Eh? speak up sonny, I'm a mite deef!
Mrapii 04-14-2004, 02:21 PM Wow! talk about overkill.
eighty_five_el_camino 04-15-2004, 02:50 PM The first pic is overkill, the 2nd pic is insane!
I LOVE them BOTH!!!
Camino85LS 04-15-2004, 07:59 PM Hey - New here - i've read up but im slow. I have a 85'LS Camino. LOVE IT TO DEATH! I have custom boxes..cheap ****..that i stuffed 6x9's in ...and i hate it...Def regreting it. Well i LOVE THE ideas you guys had for the enclosure. The first one with the AIR conditioner. I'd like to make some replica of that in mine. Cause..the 2nd one is overkill. EXCEPT - im not gonna pimp the A/C. I roll the windows down when im hot haha and my A/C works fine allready.
But dimentions! THATS WHAT I WANT... I measured 20 1/2 x 56 (close to 56)... any of u guys get something like that?
rwg42985 04-19-2004, 10:28 PM Hey that pic of the box and subs, well that’s my car!!! If you want dimensions of that box well that would take a wile to put in paper. The box is angled in just a bout every way possible. So if you really really need them well I guess I could try to write them all down!! lucky for you i have the box out of the car right now. But any way my email is rwg42985@aol.com. If you email me make the subject something that I would pick out like “box plains”. I don’t get much good mail mostly junk so make it stand out. But if you really need to get the dimensions just email me. Any other questions email me. Peace ~BAM~
82Rollin 04-21-2004, 12:29 AM How long did it take you to build the custom box?
Hey that pic of the box and subs, well that’s my car!!! Curious why you didn't hide the amps in the box behind the subs? Cooling might be an issue, but that's the only thing that comes to mind...
rwg42985 04-23-2004, 01:12 AM I did not hide the amps because it looks good. look at the setup get it now? Or no? Any way look at my web site
Maybe you will get my stile of looks. My saying “if you can make it look good then do it" so i did. whats subs with out amps???my site (http://members.cardomain.com/rwg42985)
rwg42985 04-23-2004, 01:19 AM It took 2 or 3 weekends of work maybe 5 days of work. It took 1 day to build it. But it took 4 days to design it and cut the wood. Not too bad really!!
Mac June 06-15-2011, 07:56 PM Can u send me the measurements to the lower part of the box please!!!
