: Will air bags in rear change ride height?

The reason I ask, is that I just replaced my worn out and leaky rear air shocks with KYB gas-a-just and now my rear is about 1 inch higher. I am going to get lowering springs for the rear to attempt to remove the 1 inch gap from the fender to the top of the tire. I will be using air bags when hauling my dirt bike. Does anybody know if air bags will affect ride height and if so how much? My El Camino is a 1983. thanks in advance for any input.

The air bags raise or lower the rear (but not lower than the springs hold it up to anyway) in proportion to the amount of air pressure in them.

I was going to run minimum pressure for daily driving and then add air if needed when loaded with dirt bikes. Do you think the air bags with minimum pressure will raise ride height? Do you think the gas-a-just shocks will settle with time? thanks,

I don't think the bags will change the ride height with minimum pressure, however, they will when you pump them up. But, that's the idea, anyway. I don't think your shocks will settle noticeably for a very long time, unless you haul a lot of heavy items in your Elky frequently.

thanks Rushgator, thats what I needed to know! I think I will get some rear lowering springs and install the air bags. I have to reroute my exhaust away from the left coil spring before installing the air bags. thanks again.

I have a set of bags in the rear coils of my meano, with a minimum pressure (5-10 psi) they do not change ride height. But once inflated it can raise it around 1-1.5 inches. Be very careful not to exceed the max psi, they will bulge out through the coils and give your car a lean....happened to me. :let_it_all_out:

thanks for the "heads up". good info. Now I have to figure out the best springs to lower the back 1 inch.

I got a set of springs from performance suspension technology (PST) for my '84. They have lots of stuff for G-body.

Here is an excellent chart on springs. Should help you find what you are looking for.
