The starter off of my 305 will not fit the new 350 I put in the car. I thought they were all the same.

Advance autos website has different part numbers for a 305 starter and a 350 starter. I thought they where the same but i guess not.

Did you use the flexplate off the 305 or the one that came with the 350? There are two different sizes and the starters are different---there different noses for the starters to adapr to the starter mount and flexplate....Just use all your original parts and they should fit nicely...........Dan

put new 168 tooth flexplate on it.

Thats about what I thought----at this point its a lot easier to just get the starter for that flexplate.............Dan

Is it the one for a truck 350 offset bolt holes?

Get a starter for a 1996 Chevy pickup with 454...it's a mini starter for use with a 168th flexplate http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsShelf.jsp?displayName=Starter&currentPage=1&categoryDisplayName=External+Engine&navValue=15300045&itemId=45-0&parentId=53-0

When it comes to starters, I believe you get what you pay for...that Ebay starter is cheap and most likely made in China, it has a 14 day money back warranty...You'll pay more for one from a local auto parts store...but they come with at least a 1 year warranty if not a limited lifetime warranty

And the solenoid is about the only thing you have to go bad. That will take about 3-5 years. Get the lifetime.

I'll have to disagree with theelcaminofactory about the starter you found at the Ebay website. This starter is from DB Electrical, not made in China. These are good starters they make themselves and although they have a 14 day RETURN policy I think they have a one year WARRANTY. I bought one from them for my El Camino almost 4 years ago and it is still working flawlessly.
This starter is a permanent magnet gear reduction high torque starter like GM put on the mid nineties LT1 Camaros and is every bit as good as any of the aftermarket mini starters that you'll pay two to three times as much for.
I would buy that starter in a heartbeat!

shhh already on order shhh.

Running out of money for this, so for now I am having to tighten up what I can pay out.

As far as lifetime parts, I dont go for that anymore. 20 + years ago I purchased a lifetime warrenty on a master cylinder. They will only replace it with a 2 year warrenty now.

First of all...just what does not fit,the bolt pattern, the front nose of the starter, the meshing of the gear,
We all have solutions , but I think we need to know more as to what the problem is.

The new block has three holes, 2 in line and 1 for the staggared hole pattern. I have the one from my 305 that is the straight pattern. When I held it up there it wont align with the straight line holes due to the nose hits the flywheel before you can align the holes. I am using the 168 tooth flexplate which does look like it is bigger in diameter then the one from the 305.

"Usually" the 168 tooth uses a staggered nose on the starter. The 153 tooth "Usually" uses the straight across pattern.
