Hello
I have a 1986 el camino and it wil not start. Its starts cranking but wont start. I replaced the distributor cap and the rotor. Does anyone think its my starter???????

If it cranks I would say no. Are you sure that you are getting spark to the plugs? Or fuel to the carb? Could be a clogged fuel filter.

first check the fuses...ecmb/ecm1/ign/crank/etc.(does the check engine or service engine soon light come on in the on position before you try and start it??does it normally??)
it may be the module underneath the cap if you have HEI
electric fuel pump???if you have TBI pour a little gas in the intake and see if starts briefly
it couldn't be the starter if the motor is turning, but possibly a fusible link that leads to the starter
it may be the ignition switch on the top of the bottom of the steering column..try just bumping the starter quickly letting the key return to on fast and see if you don't get some fire...you may not have fire in the starter engagement position
check and see if it will start in nuetral, possibly a safety nuetral switch switch at the trans or console shifter
does the fuel guage work?
hurry up and hop on it and tell us what the deal was

I found out that when I replaced my distributor cap I put my wires on wrong!! Thank you for the info!!!!!!
