: ram air
crash landing 03-25-2004, 10:54 AM Do any of you know anything about ram air set ups on carbureted motors. Im tryin to figure out how i can run run inside the engine compartment. I know the dual air snorkel off of a z28 might work..where would i run the hoses though..
83choochoo 03-25-2004, 01:28 PM Ive seen some people take out the inside headlights. and use screens where the lights were and hook the ram air hoses to them.
crash landing 03-25-2004, 01:36 PM i have an 81. Although that would be a good option its not one that would work for me..
83choochoo 03-25-2004, 01:45 PM I thought you had might of had the four light set up.
Mrapii 03-25-2004, 02:00 PM Pickup the air in front of the radiator support this is a high pressure area. You will have to fabricate some openings at either side of the radiator. Make sure that you seal the openings well around your pickup(s) or air could bypass the radiator and affect engine cooling. Some guys use scoops that pick up air low from under the bumper but I am leary of this because of water ingestion and possible engine hydrolock. Look around in a junk yard and you will find an air cleaner housing that can be modified. There is also a Canadian company that makes fiberglass housing but I found that they are too bulky and hard to fit. The hardware store can provide the flexible hoses (dryer vents and home AC ducting) and fittings for the fresh air ducts to the air cleaner. It is definitely worth doing, an inexpensive and effective modification.
70ELCO 03-25-2004, 02:15 PM Or you can check these guys out...http://www.ramairbox.com/
Great looking air box, or maybe you can get some ideas off there product!
Mrapii 03-25-2004, 02:28 PM Yeah, that's the Canadian company I mentioned in my post. I bought one of their kits but I couldn't fit it into my 1966 Corvette because it is too bulky and the inlets were in the wrong position. To fit it on a 5th Gen El Camino would be very difficult. I'd stick with a modified air cleaner housing, fits easier and way cheaper.
crash landing 03-26-2004, 10:56 AM what part of the radiator port do you suggest..i have looked and i cant see any sort of areas. Perhaps you have an idea that i havent thought of..
thanks
87last1 03-26-2004, 03:23 PM I have a complete Air Induction from a M/C SS on mine.
Just a single duct ,fits on the right side of the rad under the top lip on the core support. Some drilling in the core support is helpful to allow more fresh air to enter.
Check engine photo of the air induction in my album,5th Gen, page 9.
The plastic duct goes under the top lip of the core support and is held in place with a factory brkt which isn't shown. It looks in the picture at first glance that the duct is on top but that is the clip to where the brkt bolts to

crash landing 04-04-2004, 11:31 PM first off let me say thats a nice looking elco..if i could afford that sort of hood i would get one..i love the way it lools...i see your set up with the single snorkel..but would i get the same results with a dual snorkel out of an old camaro..im looking to get one but i dont know if it would be worth it..with all the hassle of hoses and what not...did your airl cleaner come from an ss monte carlo?
crash landing 04-04-2004, 11:38 PM sorry i read the post again..it is from a monte carlo ss..
87last1 04-05-2004, 05:40 PM Hi Crash Landing,
Your question,"would I get the same results with a dual snorkel",If you are in need of more air for your setup and don't mine all the routing of the air ducts ect, dual air ducts would allow more air to enter.I guess it comes down to performance or looks. My reason wasn't for performance so I chose the single air duct from a M/C SS and installed it exactly like they did because I liked the looks better.
So if its not fast,Make it look GOOD

Mrapii 04-13-2004, 02:44 AM After checking around I decided to contact Ram Air Box because they had a system on their website for GM G Bodys. I talked to Pierre and he told me that system was no longer available because GM no longer makes the air inlets from the Camaro 305 HO. I suggested in an earlier post that a dual inlet could pickup air from the area in front of the radiator thru the sides of the radiator support, but after a good long look at my 5th Gen I can see it is not possible. Pierre suggested that they have a new single inlet with a 6" hose that I could use and he Emailed me pictures of the new system. Can't use it because the large hose passes where the AC compressor is and there is no way to get an air inlet on the left side radiator support. I asked about the single air snorkel from the Monte Carlo SS, he said that the inlet is barely big enough for a 305 HO and way too restrictive for a performance 350. I think the only alternative is a twin snorkel with 4" hoses, using the inside headlite openings and relocating the battery. Anyone tried that?
crash landing 04-16-2004, 10:03 PM yeah I was trying to figure out what you were talking about in terms of location by radiator in your last post...the only problem tha i have is that i have single light grill..its an 81..so i have been thinking of a few alternatives but none seem really practical...a 305 high out put dual air snorkel has got to atleast be a lil step up..as long as you alow cold air do come in....a less amount of cold ramed air is better than a big amoung of hot engine air.
elmpala 04-17-2004, 07:07 PM I was lucky enough to buy all my parts when they were still availble from GM. I relocated my battery to allow for the Camaro ductwork. Ther'e's plenty of air flow from around my new headlights. Good luck in finding some good used parts. I've seen the air cleaner on ebay but not the ductwork. CHeck out my install in 5th Gen, pg9.
Mrapii 04-17-2004, 10:36 PM Very, very impressive Elmpala. It looks like the air inlets are mounted under the top of the radiator support? I would have problems with your setup in my '79 because my AC compressor is mounted on the left side of the engine exactly where the air inlet hose is. Did you relocate the battery behind the seats? Another question/comment: your custom guage panel is similar to the one I made and I have some reflection concerns, esp. at nite. I am thinking about redoing the panel and recessing it into the dash with a hood to prevent reflections. Do you have any problems with guage reflections?
elmpala 04-18-2004, 07:03 AM I relocated the Optima behind the passenger seat after removing the spare tire and routed the battery cable to a junction block in the engine compartment. I don't have any reflection problems with my dash panel.
crash landing 04-19-2004, 10:56 AM the battery behind the seat is a nice touch but not practical for my needs...still have to keep brain storming..
Mrapii 04-19-2004, 12:19 PM The battery behind the seat is a practical alternative especially if you use a non-venting battery like the Optima. I have had extensive experience with the Optima battery. It doesn't require any maintenance and is very reliable--install it behind the seat and you can forget about it for several years.
