have 84SS with 305 4 barrel want to change from stock ignition to "MSD" type up-grade. Then next step carb and manifold. what are the combinations that works best? the set-up now is stock and after two carb rebuilts two puters changed out time to move on. how?

If you go with an MSD box you will get instructions on using the magnetic pickup from your HEI to trigger the box. This will bypass the module and computer controls. However you will have to replace the feedback carb at the same time. Replacing the manifold and carb makes sense. I recommend an Edelbrock Performer manifold and a Holley 575 cfm Avenger. A performance ignition coil is a good idea. I'm sure other Forum members will also have good suggestions.

Does your HEI have advance weights/springs? If not you will need to replace the distributor or use a MSD Timing Control or similar product. I've had good luck with Accel Spiral Core secondary ignition wires--good quality and a reasonable price.

never looked at it before. its stock from org. i'll take a look tomorrow,

but if i'm going with a new msd box shouldn't it be matched-up with same mfg. unit?

Do you mean use an MSD distributor with a MSD box? Not necessary--you can mix or match, one from column B and one from column A; your Elky will never know the difference.

ok..was leaning towards new dist.
motor was just rebuilt and dist. is org. and it's a bit beat-up (loose). with the ignition up-grade figuired replacing the complete system to include dist.
does anyone know of any parts dist. that sells complete kits that includes msd- box, coil, wires, dist.?

I would use the following: 1-MSD 6A (Jegs PN 121-6200) $149.99, 2-MSD Street Pro Billet Distributor (121-8361) $189.99, 3-MSD Blaster Coil (121-8202) $29.99, 4-MSD Heli Coil Wire Set (121-3118) $49.99.
All part numbers and prices came from the JEGS (http://www.jegs.com/) catalog. Prices are similar elsewhere.

The MSD will work with all HEI type ignitions. Their conversion kit has the instructions to change "Old or New" style HEI distributors to MSD ignitions. I just finished, two weeks ago, installing the MSD Super HEI Conversion kit im my 76 so I am well familiar with the instructions.

I will say that you could end up needing either a filter for the tack (MSD supplied) or just buying a different tack. My SunPro II Doesn't work and there are a bunch that don't, without a filter of some type.

The whole kit with 6A box cost me under $200.00 at Jegs
