I pulled the Distributor out of the 76 Elky this week. I am installing a new MSD ignition, I got it out and was planning on rebuilding it anyway but check this out.....

The bushings for the counterweights were so bad that the counter weights were just "flopping" around and had gotten into a position where they prevented each other from operation, the pickup in the distributor was "Leaking" green corrosion from it, no kidding, and the shaft bushings were scored up from them and the shaft not getting oil at one time or another. It cost me all of $30.00 to get all the necessary pieces to rebuild it completely except the Cam Gear. It was in good shape still. Of course with the New MSD system I didn't need the other stuff inside the cap or the Distributor, electronic module or the Coil.

I am amazed that the truck still ran at all. No wonder my performance has been so sorry. I had no idea it was in that bad of shape. I new it was not sufficient for the new 383 I put in but I just figured it was the Coil and EM that needed upgrades. I suppose after 28 years its about time I rebuilt that piece. :D no hurry!

Pete, aren't you rushing things a bit fixing something "that ain't broke". It was still working, right? Why fix something that might have gone another 10-20 years?

Once you get it all together & running, it will probady feel like a new engine for real!

In all honesty, I had thought about the transmission and the engine and the rear end etc... But I just never considered that the distributor would be this shot, really. I don't know why. I suppose that I thought they'd last for ever I din't know. I got some pictures I've taken of this process. Capture the stupidity, sort of. :D
