My Dear Husband and I have (really HIM, but I like to be supportive and LOVE to see him happy) just today (AS IN THIS VERY MOMENT) purchased a '78 GMC Caballero. We're waiting for the opportunity to do the VIN ID to determine if it was in fact a Diablo or Laredo (missing dash markers and body emblems leave us unsure at the moment.

I know Leo, the dear hubby will be joining shortly but I wanted to become a member as well because I am so excited about having at this project with him! The car is road ready and will be registered and we will be doing restorations as money allows (hahahah, but we'll try!) ...

Hubby has been into cars since his younger days and spent a lot of his youth in garages. We also spend at least 4 nights a week (weather permitting) strolling our local cruise nights. Always dreamed of having something to bring ... fever finally got the best of the man!

We would appreciate any input, suggestions for sources of pictures, info, history etc., that might not be found in a web search (tried lots of combinations). We know and are excited that as a Elky cousin, we will be looking at lots of Elky literature and using the same parts ... we're honored to be related!

Does this purchase make me a new Mother? I never thought I wanted a girl, but I guess this will work!

Looking forward to becoming a part of the family!

Welcome to a great site and glad to see another Caballero has landed here. I've had my 80 since last September and it's been a expensive hobby but I've done alot to it since I purchased my first older car. Lots of knowledge here from guys and gals. Rango:nanawrench::nanawrench:

:Welcome!:

If it's not on this site, it's prolly not worth knowing! (that may include some of the people like elkiebob for 1! LOL JK bob)
Just remember 2 things here, we're here for you on those days when your new child acts more like an unruly step-child, and no one ever means to be deliberately insulting, we just kid around a lot.
One tip to start you off..... look thru the gallery, and find a picture of a white elco just like yours, profile shot from the side is best. Print it out. Then you can make as many copies as you want (I went thru 50-60 on mine) and color them with colored pencils/markers and come up with a paint job you really like, for about $10 total.
Some of us on here (like DDDonny) have cubic $$ and like to drive pink vehicles, while others (like me) seem to be able to build a new house for $1.49. LOL JK, but there are a LOT of low buck ways to do things listed here.

P.S. Have to say this, be sure and tell Leo how lucky he is that he won't have to argue and finagle about every penny he puts into the new elco. Not all wives/gfs/significant others are as participatory as you are! :violin: He's a lucky guy!

Welcome to the site. Glad to have another el camino owner and tell Leo that he has a helper just like i do. My wife helps me when i need her to give me a helping hand and she is there. She has helped me with my 70 ss chevelle, 67 ss chevelle and now the 79 el camino. :nanawrench: So, you and Leo are going to have a great time redoing your truck for sure. My wife won't drive them by she love's to ride in them. She is scared she might put a ding or scratch or wreck one of them, so she leaves that to me!!!! :cruch::cruch::biggrin2::biggrin2: Well, if you all have any questions or need some great info on something, ask away and there are alot on here who can help you and answer your questions. Add some pics when you get some and we'll see what your new daughter looks like. :poke: Lol !!

Thank you so much everyone for the warm welcome! Leo didn't have the chance last night to join .. between picking her up (I've named her Caba - real original, I know! :???: ), driving her a little and hitting auto parts stores, we got home late. He spent the remainder of the night rounding out his detailing tool box and I researched our VIN and Cowl tag (very impressed I now KNOW what a Cowl tag is!) I'll probably be posting very soon to decode the one thing I can't figure out ... gotta find the board that best suits the topic!

Leo is an awesome guy. Technical and tickled pink (or whatever shade you want to call it) with the new baby and being very patient with me as I learn! I've spent the last 9 years going to various cruise nights and totally appreciate his excitement at having our own. We are anticipating large amounts of kidding (rations of shi*, if you will) locally as our close neighbor has two chevelles and a mustage in PRIMO shape thanks to his own and very close friends hard work. Caba is so representative of my honey.. unique. He'll take it all in stride but I know he'll be striving to show them how special Caba can be!

As for being a good catch/wife etc.., I have my equal in Leo! 9 years ago I didn't know squat about Harley Davidsons or Westerns (movies and TV shows..) now I can name a Harley Model on site, ball park the year and tell you what's stock and not... and Lee Van Cleef, James Arness and Spaghetti Era Clint are my heroes, I know a lot about Wyatt Earp and visiting the places like Virginia City has become a passion!

Leo DID let me drive her last night. Realized I'm ALMOST as excited as him and realized depriving me of the drive on her first night home would be rather callous! I think he's a little miffed I told him it felt like a boat! Jeez, I never said that was a BAD thing!

I will post pictures ASAP!!

Thanks for the info on the Sturbridge show ... you just might see us there! (Can't look back and thank you personally by name without losing what I typed!)

First on the list of To-do's is a tune up and then dxing overall issues (engine has a bit of a skip). Also it appears the smog "something or other" is not connected (or is broken) and Leo is going to have to figure out which it is, WHY it is, and if we can get a sticker without it OR if its an immediate need! Excuse my technical NAIVITE! I repaired M-1 Bradley's in the Army, but they were a lot more straightforward!! Leo is the engine man!

Have a Caba Dabba Day!!:nanawrench:
