We're looking at buying a tonneau cover for our Elky but aren't sure which way to go - snap down type or velcro type. Any comments or suggestions? Also, anyone know where, other than OPG, to find one? Thanks.

Definitly snap down. Besides, the chrome snaps look cool. Velcro will tend to "peel off" at high speeds.

I had mine re-done by a local upholstrey shop. It was only a little more than the "kit", and I didn't have to install. Plus, it was much better quality.

Check around for a 'Custom Car Upholstrey' shop in you're area.

Go with snaps. They look and work better.

Here's a pic of what I got on mine:

I had mine done at a local upholstery shop too and it turned out pretty good. The only downside to the snaps is that you have to drill holes into the body. Another downside to these covers is that they fill up with water and after a day of rain the back has turned into a lake.

I don't have the rain problem. The shop installed four bowes, that are removable, to make the rain run off. The standard is three, but I always seem to over do things.

It does leak where it meets the rear cab/window. But thats just the way it is.

Avoid the velcro, it doesn't hold up. Try a local upholstery shop that does good work. Make sure they install the removable bows to keep the cover from turning into a duck pond. On my 1979 El Camino the previous owner had the cover installed at a local shop many many years ago and there is no rust problem at the snaps, however the car has had good care and been garaged most of it's life.

I also own a 78 Elky and I'm going with a hard tonneau cover. http://www.honestcharley.com/ec%20bed%20cargo.htmhttp://www.honestcharley.com/ec%20images/Hard%20Lid%202.JPGhttp://www.honestcharley.com/ec%20images/Hard%20Lid%203.JPG

Need to be mindful of the position of the snaps on your bed. My brother's '81 Elky has bed snaps in positions that are different from my '82. Mine had the top side rails added later in life so a "stock" cover would not work. That necessitated adding a few new snaps to the body which meant I had to have a custom cover made at a local upholstery shop. Price wasn't too bad ($139) and I got my choice of color and no seams. Mine has 3 bows but still gets some water pooling below the back window - but no leaks of any consequence.
