: Need electrical advice!
aceydeucy70 08-16-2010, 02:01 PM I just bought a 77 El Camino, needs some fix up work. The two things I need to get fixed, and don't know where to start are the Gas Gauge and the Reverse lights. The Gas Gauge stays pinged at "Full" all the time. The Reverse lights are always on when taillights are on. Sounds like I have grounding issues, but haven't worked on older cars more than the newer ones, so I am lost...

gilby 08-16-2010, 04:15 PM check the "ribbon"cable for any broken wires,if not ,go to the left rear light marker, and remove it to get access to the rear wiring harness, inspecet it good and look for any broken wires.its a good place to start..:poke::beer:
aceydeucy70 08-16-2010, 07:00 PM Thanks...thats to fix the reverse lights, yes? Any thoughts on the gas gauge?
aceydeucy70 08-16-2010, 07:02 PM Sorry to be so novice, but the "ribbon cable"???
FL Kymino 08-16-2010, 07:04 PM Also clean the contact parts as you go thru checking. Who knows when it was done if at all.
aceydeucy70 08-16-2010, 08:42 PM Will I have to drop the tank to troubleshoot the electrical system? How labor intensive is that?
gilby 08-16-2010, 09:20 PM Sorry to be so novice, but the "ribbon cable"???
it looks like 4 wire or more ,flat, black, and runs under the rug/sound barrer.
borjawil 08-17-2010, 02:05 PM you dont have to drop the tank necessarily to test the fuel gauge and system. Check out an earlier post of mine on testing the fuel gauge system.
stev6343 08-17-2010, 02:09 PM Dropping the tank is easy; 2 bolts each on two straps; just be certain the tank is near empty; they do get a tad heavy w/gas.
aceydeucy70 08-17-2010, 05:39 PM Dude...looked where the wiring harness is...what a mess....there are different colored wires, splices, you name it. I might need a pro for this one. Thanks for your help!
gilby 08-17-2010, 06:30 PM Dude,I wish I was there to do it for ya,its really easy to do,I did mine with a "Hidden"pluge to tow a trailer with.:poke::beer:
steelybill 08-18-2010, 07:57 PM Up underneath the left rear quarter panel, is a plug, which plugs into a connector that's mounted in the inner fender panel. That plug has the tail & back-up light wiring in it.
The tank sending unit wire is separate, and not in that same harness, and it's TAN.
Like mentioned, a bad ground may be the problem.
There is a ground wire under the left side of the dash, where the dash bolts to the body. That wire (black) goes into the harness behind the dash, where a bunch of ground wires are tied together, so check that wire where it's bolted to the body/dash mount.
I'm just putting my "77 wiring harness back in my project, so I'm just telling you what I see under there. Hope it helps.....
