So, I may end up buying an elky without an engine and transmission and wanted opinions on the best way to move it. I was thinking about renting a truck and towing the elky back, but don't know if there is a best style / or best place to rent one from.

What do you have for a Tow vehicle? You could just rent a car dolly since most of the weight is gone and tow it home (if it`s Not too far). Otherwise it`s U-Haul or Ryder.

I don't, but I'll probably just rent a strong pickup truck. which if everything comes together nicely my insurance company will pay for most of.

If you haven`t already , I would suggest you first call a couple of places and ask for an estimate to winch it up on their flat bed truck or lift it with their wrecker and drop it off at your place . It`s safe , no hassles and they do the risky part . Up north I think it`s called bada ping dada boom ! Towing something presents a few challenges ;especially , depending on the condition of the tow , amount of traffic , distance and difficulty to get it to where you want it . If you feel it`s too much , the estimate will give you a starting point to see what it would be worth for you to do it yourself and have all the fun .

I would just buy a AAA membership and use them... Would be cheaper and they would know what there doing. Plus they insure you if any damage occurs. Had all my cars towed through them, flat bed only.

you will want the front tires off the ground at least, they dont follow so well on a towbar without some weight up front. (figgered that one out the hard way) When i tow em i have a ramp trailer. has a winch mounted on it to drag em up and on. no worries about something falling off or failing dragging it down he road on its own wheels. tow strap is a horrible idea....you are trusting brakes that are probably in need of a rebuild from just plain old rust. Brake fluid is hygroscopic. The system will rust if it sits. http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac309/JohnBer_album/78ELKY019.jpg

You didn't say how far. The best way is a tilt back flat bed car hauler, contact a towing company (if it's not too far) and see how much they'll charge...usually around $70 bucks if it's local and non-emergency. If it's a long distance check U-Haul for a car hauler. Car dollies are ok for a short distance and since the car has the driveshaft removed, front wheels on the dolly, but you'll need a couple of buddies to take along with you to get it on the dolly.
