I put a Roadmaster LT1 into my '84. Used the 4L60E transmission and the computer controls the shift. Also used all the accessories from the LT1 -- used a relocation bracket to put the AC comprressor back up on the driver side like original El Camino. It needed a couple hydraulic fitting adapters for the LT1 lines to tie into my steering box. The rubber elbow ahead of the throttle body is the only intake piece I used -- plugged the intake resonator hole with a hockey puck just to be colorful. I had headers on the old 305, and they bolted right up to the LT1, using LT1 exhaust gaskets. Also replaced the distributor cap and spark plug wires while the engine was out, cuz it't much easier then.
There's a couple recent threads on fuel pickups. Then I used a 86 Camaro fuel filter on the rear suspension cross member and ran fuel feed and return lines up the left frame rail.
Here's a couple pics -- the shots of the engine out of the car will be most helpful.

My experience was that with headers and short intake with a cone filter (threw away the intake resonator) the mixture was off even with the oxygen sensors working in the headers. So I needed to get the computer reprogrammed. Reprogramming can also eliminate the VATS, air pump, EGR, whatever else you don't use...
