I want to know what I can do to a 350 stock engine to get the maximum horse power and performance from it?

Turning it into a 383 with a stroker crank kit and some better heads, is a good start. It all depends on your budget and intended use.

Well really, the question is.... what can't you do to a small block chevy?

The first thing you would need to know is if the block still has any life in it. If it's in need of a rebuild now but already been machined out to its limits, then it's time to scrap it and get a replacement. Chances are it's still got some life in it though.

I haven't bought 'em yet, but there have been a number of posts that mentioned a few different books on building the SBC.

Like mentioned already budget is the biggest issue . Start with a budget on what you have to spend and figure out if you want this to be a regular daily driver . You can make a 383 a reliable daily driver or you can stick with the stock 350 crank, bore the block 30 over add some better heads , cam , intake ,carb ,and headers and it will liven that ole 350 up . Chances are you have a 3970010 block which is a great block to work with.

Mine's a 3970014.

For the original poster, if you're wondering where that block number is, it's on the bell housing shoulder (for lack of a better term) behind the left side head. Here's a pic of mine (the firewall is the bottom of the picture).

Thanks everyone! I have more time than money. I want to make it a daily driver but with some more power. I had the engine rebuilt in march. I put a edelbrock intake manifold, edelbrock carb, and a new msd distributor on her. I want to replace the headers, what kind should I look into getting?

If your on a budget you can go with a nice set from Summit racing or Jegs, again all depends on how much you want to spend right now, I would go with a full set of headers from Summit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G9001/ a very good buy and then go with a good set of mufflers like these..http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-17656/ or really you can go with whatever you like, that's the best part about our elky's is that there are many good choices out there.

With the new headers and dual exhaust you will be more than happy with the results,a nice daily driver with some kick to get you down the road in style, later on you can work on the suspension and brakes (if you have not already) Its always a good idea to rebuild any suspension/brake parts on any 35+ year old car,it does no good to have any power if you cant bring it to a safe stop,so be sure your brake system is up to date and there are no leaks or rusting parts, you would be shocked how well your elky will run with all the new upgrades..keep it up!

Have fun...
