i have an 82 with the remote mirror on the drivers side. i recently got a new RH mirror and painted it and i want to paint the drivers side mirror. my question is how do you get that cable off the mirror? the mirrors come apart in to 3 pieces(the bullet shaped part, the part that attaches to the door, and the glass) but with that cable you cant get it apart. the hole is too small to just pull the cable through, and ive tries everything and im stumped. if anyone has done this before id really like to hear how.

You don't have to take the cable off the mirror to remove it from the car. all you have to do is take the inside panel off the door.you will need a small allen key to loosen the set screw from behind the remote thats on the door panel, then you will find the cable in clips inside the door just remove the cable from the clips, and unbolt the two bolts holding the mirror on then you just pull the cable with remote out throught the big whole thats already under the mirror in the door out side door skin, this is the easyest way that ive found to remove remote mirrors.

yes, i can do that, but how do you get the actual mirror apart? that way i can paint it with out having to worry about the glass. i dont think it can be done. not with out ruining that cable...or the mirror. thanks anyway

I don't think you can take them apart or put them back together with out replacing the mirror glass with a new one.

I have a 78 elky and I had my mirror off about a year ago so I don't remember everything. but I don't thing that you can get it apart more than you have and I do know that taking off the glass does not help anything except allowing you to put on a new one. I did take mine off to see if I could get it apart, so I do remember that part. Don't take the glass off unless it is broke or you will have the same comments that I did.
Good luck
