: LED Tail Lights ???
I recently helped get LED tail lights into production for the 73 to 91 full size Chevy trucks, vans, Blazers, and Suburbans. Is there a intrest in LED Tail Lights for El Caminos ???? I need to know befor I contact the company that'd make them. If there isn't enough intrest, it wouldn't be worth thier effort.
WarPony 04-05-2004, 06:22 PM I am REALLY interested in the L.E.D. lights! I don't think the L.E.D. bulbs that are offered now would cut the mustard. Would there be a '78 only option as they are different from the rest?
PA_82Elky 04-05-2004, 07:10 PM After being rear ended 2 months after getting my 82 I am convinced the tail and brake lights need help. Just too low to the ground IMHO. Put me down as interested. For the time being all I can do is install an LED third brake light.

86camino 04-05-2004, 08:12 PM yeah led's for elky is a must i think.

I agree, sorry to hear about your mishap though. I added an LED 3rd brake light to the cab of my 76 just for that reason. I also took apart the lights, painted the insides of the buckets with a Bumper Chrome paint to add more intensity and it does really well.
I'd like to see anyone make an LED light for the 76 (73~77) and they should have their own buckets/lenses.

chevynut 04-06-2004, 09:17 AM What am I missing? The vehicles listed in the first post use 1157, 1156, and 194 lamps (or a combination of them). What would be specific to El Camino's? I have seen replacements (LED'S) for 1157 and 1156.
Sorry, I must be overlooking something

Sorry, I must be overlooking something  We're talking about LED circut bords that fit behind the the tail light lenses. See http://coloradok5.com/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/983288/page/1/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1 for the ones for the fullsize Chevy trucks.

I wouldn't be interested in "LED boards" too expensive and ricey for me.http://www.chicagolandbuick.org/forums_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smileyR.gif
I am interested in the 1157 type LED bulbs if they light faster and light the entire lens.
guru54 04-06-2004, 03:46 PM thats a cool idea and ive used some of these newer 3 SUper Bright LEDs and they can make your eyes water if u try looking at them head on. id use them on the el camino.
PunkRican 04-06-2004, 04:07 PM LEDs sound like a great idea. i'd liek some for my 70, how much would they run? anyone got an idea?
Tommy 04-06-2004, 05:44 PM I added a 6 led strip as a 3rd brake light. It's small enough to go unnoticed until it is on, then it's amazing how bright it is.
n1earnhrt 04-07-2004, 09:31 AM Count me in on the led lights
chevynut 04-12-2004, 08:15 AM Ahhhhh, I see. I now can see how a replacement for an 1157 would just "spot" through the lens and not light up the entire lens as it would not be reflected off of the rear mirrored part of the tailight assembly.
Thank you all!
pinstripebob 04-14-2004, 02:40 PM I'm in! Unless it's a ton of money.
79roady 04-15-2004, 01:52 AM Count me in! The low position of the tail lights makes anything we can do to improve the signal almost mandatory!
ElkySS 04-15-2004, 07:41 AM Somebody might contact these folks and inquire about a new product for 5th gen Elkys. I'd suggest the '78 use the same new mod, and a 79-87 lens, as the rest of the 5th Gens: http://www.lambertenterprises.com/
or these folks:

Okay, if we want to get LED tail lights into production, everybody needs to contact ( randy.aldridge@d2mtechnologies.com ) of www.d2mtechnologies.com I've got thier LED tail lights in my full size Blazer and am very impressed with them. :D 8)
John D 04-16-2004, 06:13 AM I considered the same thing, and nobody makes a dedicated replacement for '64. The LED replacement bulbs work OK, but a thing to consider is that the high intensity LED's have a narrow (15 deg) or so "window" and shoot light pretty much straight back.
I've got some electronics "smarts", and built my own. You can see the results here - http://home.earthlink.net/~j.delke/id4.html - a lot of the pics are "clickable" for larger views.
They are dedicated to a '64, and require NO modifications to the lenses or housings. There is one wiring splice to make (changing backup socket to stop circuit, and connecting "new" white LED backup module to the old backup wiring.
Whaddya thing?? A marketable item??
79roady 04-16-2004, 07:07 AM Has anybody checked these fellows out? They have 100 degree angle bulbs, but there is a disclaimer about brightness.
http://www.superbrightleds.com/1157.htm
John D 04-16-2004, 10:58 AM I checked out just about everyone I could find for info on the pre-made replacement "bulbs". (I'm actually using 1156 red replacements in my backup housings for 2nd brakelights.)
My research revealed due to the voltage and cooling req's of the hyper-bright LEDs (yes, LEDs can get too hot), you'll find them packaged with either quite a few hyper's, or a LOT of mid-brightness units.
LED brightness:
They are measured in milli-candela's. A low to mid brightness LED would be in the range of 1500 - 3500, a high from 3500 to 8500, and a hyperbright from 8500 and up. Anything lower than 1500 would be considered an "indicator" lamp type application, and not for real illumination.
My difficulty was that on a '64, the tail/stop lenses are clear red plastic (if that makes sense). There are no "fresnels" to diffuse the light around. It works fine with a regular bulb, because it throws light nearly 360 degrees. Using a LED replacement "bulb" I'd have very little light to the sides, and basically lose my side parking/running lamps (read that a T-bone waiting to happen). This is why I chose to make my own. The individual LED's are angled on the board to throw light nearly 180 degrees.
If your year has "fresnel'd" lenses, and are relatively small, I'd go with the hyper modules, if you have large lenses, go with the mediums.
Word of caution. Take a look at the replacement modules (link in previous post). See where the base (where the LED's are mounted) flares out quickly from the "socket" area? This may pose a clearance problem in a recessed socket for you. This diameter is nearly the full diameter of a regular 1157, and really close to the socket. If your regular bulbs (1157 or 1156) are in recessed sockets, the LED units might not fit. A regular bulb tapers up and out gradually (like a "bulb"-duh) and will clear a recessed socket. The LED replacements flare out to full size right NOW.
mattnificent 04-19-2004, 06:31 PM im down like four flat tires
I'm interested just say when available.
85SSChooChoo 04-19-2004, 09:21 PM Almost got rear ended today, very interested in these units.
nowukno 04-19-2004, 09:59 PM I used some sealed L.E.D trailer lights on my 78 i installed them into a blank roll pan from Lauren ENG.. They work like a charm.. You can see pics. in the 5th gen gallery on page 10 album name 78' nowukno
elcaminokid 06-26-2004, 09:31 AM if there is a way to make them or get 'em somewhere lemme know for sure!!!!
robzkool2 07-01-2004, 09:21 PM i'm lookin' to fabricate my own LED taillamps 'cuz nobody sells 'em...about time!it's hard enough to find stock replacements.if you build a good LED assembly, simple hook-up and good looks & fit, everyone will want 'em.i know i do!
WINGMAN 07-02-2004, 01:05 PM I'd be interested in ones that fit in the stock holes in the bumper for
5th gen. I would also like to know where the best place to splice the wire
for a LED strip for the back window would be. At the brake switch, maybe?
85Elky 07-03-2004, 11:23 AM why don't they make led's for all the generation? it makes sense to give choice and freedom to the other generations of elkys and elky owners<shrug>
John D 04-30-2007, 03:20 PM http://home.earthlink.net/~jekled/
464elky 05-02-2007, 06:53 PM Wingman, Splice into the WHITE wire at the brake light switch.
UnclesCamino 05-02-2007, 08:59 PM Has anyone seen the LED strip lights that you can french into the body and fill it with clear epoxy, then paint over to make them invisible until you hit the brakes?I had seen them on a bike on one of those chopper shows and have never seen them since. I was thinking one of those right on the tailgate would make a great 3rd brake light.
Rob
amalgamator 05-02-2007, 10:38 PM Yea. I would love to get LED's. I'm putting a third brake light at the top of my rear window too. Worries me to think some idiot might rear end me after I put all this work into it. The more attention grabbing your brake lights are, the better it would be. Shoot, I'd put a intense strobe light back there if it would keep the cell yakkers and makeup artists off my butt.
n1earnhrt 05-04-2007, 03:37 PM Here's a brake light modulator this is for motorcycle but should work for a cars brakes to.
Light Modulator (http://www.customdynamics.com/brake_light_modulator.htm)
heres the website I got it from.
Custom Dynamics (http://www.customdynamics.com/index.htm)
Bowtie 05-22-2007, 03:58 PM Modulators are great and have one on each of my motorcycles. Headlights too. They won't work on LED's though unless one of you wizards can put the proper load resisters in the circuit.
Take care.
n1earnhrt 05-22-2007, 05:22 PM The link I posted had some modulators that are designed for LEDs.
Bowtie 05-23-2007, 05:34 AM Right! Sorry I missed it.
Take care.
66trar 05-23-2007, 05:37 PM I would love to have LED taillights on my car. Those old incandescent bulbs on our rides don't exactly have what it takes to keep people off your butt during the daylight hours...

:( Unfortunately no matter how bright the lights you will still have those drivers on your butt.
The problem is inattentive drivers. In other words, dim whits, not dim lights! :(
HemiTCoupe 05-26-2007, 03:48 PM There is someone that posts on the site that makes custom led tail lights for you. Hes not someone that throws crap together, and see ya by! He knows about LEDs, and makes the circit boards for each one.
----> http://home.earthlink.net/~jekled/
With that said, I light up like a X-Mas tree on my trike, with all the lights I have, I still get idiots that say, OH!, I didn't see you!

464elky 12-19-2007, 05:29 AM Does anybody know if this went anywhere? Is any progress being made to produce 5th gen LED tail/brake lights?
RogerD 12-19-2007, 07:10 AM count me in also.... :D
Jive 65 12-19-2007, 05:46 PM Any manufacturer is going to look at the market potential for a product. There might be enough 5 gens around to make it profitable, but 20 guys on here saying "I'm in" isnt going to do it.
There are newer 1157 & 1156 bulbs on the market that have layers of LED's so the light is disbursed better.
I personally have mounted some 67-69 Camaro LED lens' flush in the tailgate of my '65. PIcs are in the 2nd Gen Gallery under Jive 65, page 5 0r 6. The guy that started the build shaved everything including the tail lights, his plan was to use the small backup lights in the bumper.
Maximus84 12-22-2007, 08:34 PM I am DEFINATELY interested! When can we get the good news, about going into production? 8)
