Hello!

Yesterday's event has me all excited about the future and filled with questions...

We got our scoring sheet (Thanks for the direction Tony!) ... and we will not only be scrapbooking it, but we'll be keeping an eye on it as we work towards bringing Cinderella to the ball!

First ... I'm asking this HERE because I figure you guys are gonna know ... but if not HERE, what forum do you think would be the best to post a question like this? Some of the topics lend themselves to the particular forum, but I don't see one that particularly pertains to shows...

The question(s) is/are this: How are the judging classes generally defined? I know that a lot will depend on the show, but are there "industry" definitions of classes of original, original/restored, modified, etc.?

Going to yesterdays event really fueled the fire for Leo and I and has us discussing a million and one possibilities ... however, we want to make informed choices that, while pleasing us, keep us in line with the class we choose to be in. It would help us to know, WHAT and HOW MUCH we can change things (color, parts, etc.) before we fall out of original/restored. We have a few different visions in mind and knowing these particulars would likely help us define our path...

Any guidance you can give would be GREATLY appreciated! We are in it for the fun of it, but we want to make informed decisions too!

Thanks all!

Maribeth (That's for you Tom!)

Survivor: An un-restored, original vehicle and usually one in very good condition

Original/Stock: Untouched classic cars. All parts matching, #'s matching. (A vehicle that has not been modified and is in the same configuration as it came from the factory )

Restored: Repaired with same parts as original old parts. (A vehicle that has been reconditioned from original condition in an effort to return it to like-new condition. A restored car can be refurbished using either original or reproduction parts and techniques )

Resto-mod: Repaired with slight modification. (Larger engine, paint, etc.)(Refers to non original manufacturer parts)(A nearly stock-appearing vehicle that has been fitted with late-model chassis, drivetrain and conveniences)

Modified: Includes all vehicles with body modifications, and visual modifications. (Tires, gauges, seats, etc.)

Re-creation: A vehicle that has been modified to appear like another car or truck entirely, or like a more desirable version of that same vehicle

I was thinking I was going to keep mind as orginal as I possible could but of course the motor has already been changed out and every time I go to a Car Show or just a Cruisie-In I seen to learn something new every time. I did not expect to get any type of trophy this year and it's just another beautiful surprise when I do so for me it's been a great summer and sorry if I'm just wasting your time for posting this. Typically your allowed to change color (except in concourse classes) and wheels, considered "personal touches" .... 3 mods total to be able to stay in original class... BTW MB I believe your and Leo's cabby is originally a white car, check the codes on the glove box door

Hi Tony,
Ours was definately white the last time. The color code on the firewall lists a blue. From color chips we have tried to check that color to what is present, it looks different then the same depending on the angle and light. My neighbor a former body man and a restorer himself thinks it is the same but advised me to bring it to a paint shop to have it scanned.

In our case if the color is wrong and the wheels are different does that leave one last change before we are out of our class?

Does the color have to match the cowel tag or just be a color offered on that vehicle in 78?

Thanks,
Leo

If its painted correctly then people at a show like yesterday wont know what color it was if you go with a factory paint color. Most shows wont count That as a mod, the wheels yes

Our recent regional included groupings like Heartbeat described above but defined a little different.
Stock and restored were like his definition, modified was less than 5 minor mods, and custom was more than 5 mods or major changes to body or drive line. We also had a work in progress group.

I've never been one for matching numbers, can't resist the urge to improve. So my LT1 engine, Lauren nose, Camaro seats, and more put me into the custom group. ;-)

Leo and I have been talking about it and we seem to be leaning toward staying original/restored. I know we'll be looking for a lot of info and the like on that class.

Tony, it is so frustrating with our paint. The paint code lists as light blue metallic, both top and bottom. Ernie believes that our trim on the sides of the car is like that of the diablo and laredo versions, but my VIN research indicates it was NEITHER. Like Leo said, the paint job on it now (not top of the line) may or may not be the original color ... but when the time comes (aka as the money makes itself appear) we'll invest in a carefully thought out color and use all the information you all have shared with us.

We definitely know how far we have to go, but we truly appreciate what we currently have. Not a bad way to live if you ask me! :rose:

Diablo and Laredo are GMC not Chevrolet vehicles. The Diablo and Laredo are different option packages for the GMC Sprint. And now you know, lol. Just a random fact :P I can tell you all the vehicle info w/ the vin if you're having trouble. All El Caminos have a VIN number beginning with 1, while all GMC Sprints have a VIN number beginning with 5. You might have an El Camino clone! OH NOES! lmfao, J/K. Where are you getting your paint code info?

We got our vin code information from the references here and it seems correct. We definitely know the differences are in the little things like the insignias :???: because we can find almost ANY part that is Elky/Cabby neutral ... try and find a Cabby only ... forgetabboutit! Ernie gave us some great info this weekend based on his experience with 78s ... because we don't know the complete history of our baby, we can only go by the Codes and assume that the variations we find (like possibly the trim Ernie referred to) were changes made. We just found out we have a later dash panel than what was original and we'll be looking to return that to the original wide arc speedometer v. the round one we have now with a clock.

I believe I read in my research that the Laredo and the Diablo were packages for the Caballero and were offered after 78, the Sprint was last manufactured in 77. I know so very little though, always looking to add to my library of knowledge. Leo is being very patient with me and I thoroughly appreciate the help here! Babe in the woods - that's me!

When I got the 80 Caballero, last year I was not aware that GMC had a look alike and I've learned a great deal during the last 12 months about these cars. Most of it's been right on this site and a book about El Camino, Sprint & Caballero that I bought from one of the 6-10 catalogs that sell parts for the 78-87 years. I still try to stay away from after-market products if it possible. That's my 2 cent. Michael

I appreciate people restoring cars, but anyone who has seen mine knows I like mine modified from front to back! Lol

And you are truly a MASTER at it Tony .. and so young!!! We'd love to modify as well, but from a financial standpoint, original/restoration is a much more attainable goal. The minute that changes (the financial position) one of two things will happen ... Caba will have a whole new vision for her future (engine, paint, interior) OR Caba will get a sibling who will be the modifying subject ...though if that were to happen I don't know that it would be another Caba or an Elky... would all depend on the circumstances and the budget!
