: Street Camnio
Numby 04-07-2004, 04:30 PM Hey im new to the El Camino world and I am looking to make an anwser street performance car.
I have an 85 4.7L v6 with a good body.
I would like to know what recommendations you guys would like to give me. I want this to make people say wow and make myself say wow.
I would also like some reccomendations on high horsepower Turbochargers / Superchargers i dont care how much it cost really as long as i can get alot of horsepower for it.
Tell me what modifications you would suggest that i put on there so i do not blow it up and any other extra pieces that i should put on the car.
Neons and others things have already been considered.
Mrapii 04-10-2004, 05:18 AM Get a crate small block V8 engine, and if cost is no object you can get streetable 427ci small blocks from Bill Mitchell with 550+hp. Horsepower costs money--how much do you want?
ElCaminoGrant 04-10-2004, 09:44 AM I agree, a V8 is the only way to go. I recommend swapping the trans too. You also might look at gears for the rearend.
theelcaminofactory 04-10-2004, 10:35 AM Well, if money is of no concern, go with a 572 cubic inch bigblock and twin turbos...that'll turn some heads! :lookround:
80elcamino 04-10-2004, 05:14 PM Of course any of the following will need to be blown and a nice 6-71 would do it. A 4-71 or 250 from weiand would even fit under the hood.

I would either put in a 472 ci SMALL block or the 572 that runs 92 octane (you could go with the 12:1 compression and run race fuel)

with a nice 5 or 6 speed the 472 SB would be economical as well; an automatic choice could be a TH400 these are great and you can't hardly break them.
You'll want to feed this beast with 2 750 cfm carbs or maybe a demon by grant that puts out 1150 cfm.
Then we round out this adventure with a stronger bottom end and a stronger rear.
Whad'ya think?! :D :-D :)
87elky 04-10-2004, 06:22 PM What about a Vette motor?
80elcamino 04-10-2004, 06:26 PM which year 72, 92.....?
vega_guy_76 04-11-2004, 01:37 AM Then we round out this adventure with a stronger bottom end and a stronger rear.
Whad'ya think?! :D :-D :)
Would that be a strong bottom end in the Elky? Or a stronger bottom end in your own self?
Sorry, I couldn't resist asking.

72Sprint 04-11-2004, 06:37 AM Hmmm...
High horsepower turbocharger...
Wow factor...
Money no object...
Try this (http://www.bankspower.com/twin-turbo-engine.cfm) 8)
80elcamino 04-11-2004, 07:16 AM Hey Vega! BOTH
hehehe :-)
BTW i guess we gave numby too many options, he hasn't said a word.
ElkyPete 04-17-2004, 10:59 PM Start with a GMPP HT383 short block, get a Victor Jr. Intake, good set of roller lifters a Comp Cams Magnum 280HR roller cam,, Roller 1.6:1 rockers Roller timing chain, a set of forged pistons 10.5:1 compression w/64cc chambers, a set of AFR 195C heads, and a Street Demon 650. Use a high volume Oil Pump with splash shield and a High volume Fuel pump. Get a good set of headers, your choice but I'd suggest that they be coated to help control heat. I'd use a Mildon oil pan 4qts is plenty.
I’d use a MSD Billet Distributor and the 6A or 6AL control box and the blaster II coil. Use a set of plugs that are one-step hotter than factory and start the gap at .45 adjust and needed. Use a good 8 or 8.8 mm helical core plug wires.
Either put a THM 400 behind that with a 8.5" 10 bolt and 3.73:1 gear and PowerTrax LockRite locker or use a very well built 700R4 and 4.10:1 gears in the rear end. I'd go with the 4.10 and 700R4 and a cooler for the transmission, but that might not be strong enough to deal with the 500 Horses you'll be putting out at the flywheel good to around 7500 RPM and at or close to 490 Lb./ft. of torque.
This combination should get you between 7.5 to solid 9 seconds in the 1/8th and from 10.5 to 11 second in the quarter. Maybe quicker. You can even consider using a set of airbags in the rear springs to use to preload the rear end.
If this truck had the 700R4 and the 3.73:1 gears, it could exceed highway speeds of 150 Mph. With the same tranny and 4.10:1 you could have highway speeds of 120 still maybe more and excellent take off, better than a THM350. It would be incredibly fast.
Numby 04-19-2004, 03:22 PM Thanks for all the suggestions guys. And the reason i posted no reply is i was computerless for a few days. I got the car and im beginning work on it now i cant decide with all these suggestions you guys have gave me. Still i would like to know what suggestions you can give me on Rims, Body Modifications, Interior Modifications, Paint Jobs what ever. Btw i love the twin turbo systems but thats just a little to insane to have in an El Camino.
Like i said thank you for the suggestions let me look more indepth into them all and see what i can come up with. This might cost a little more than i expected but it really doesn't bother me.
--Edit--
I notcied a question while re-reading everything so i will anwser it here.
I would like about 550-600 horses. It's not really all about the horse power i just want something that when i step on the gas the car behind me will say Holy Sh!t. And the one in front will run off the road. This and i am really looking to make the body very decent. Also someone said something about a charger fiting under the hood. I dont mind getting a new hood or having to raise it a little bit. I liked the idea of getting the crate v8 also i was thinking about doing that and just changing some **** around. I really want a Automatic so any manuals are kinda rejected but i will still pay attention to them if they taylor my needs to what i really want. Thanks for helping me with this guys its much abliged (i can't spell that word)
80elcamino 04-19-2004, 03:52 PM Hi man, Glad you back!
I mentioned the blown 572 Big Block or 472 Small Block. I thought that fitting the charger under the hood would make it a sleeper and that's what makes people say "HOLY SH!T". If they see a huge 6-71 charger they'll say: "well that's about what i expected. Put a small cowl hood and every thing will fit nicely.
If you're only looking for 550 HP the 572 will do, but I think the 472 small block with a 250 weiand charger would be the most fun.
If you looking for a auto trans you better start looking around for a TH400 or a strong 700r4. I'm partial to the 400 but many racers use them and they are out of production so good luck.
Post your ideas and when you start post the pics. Must be nice to say "moneys no object" and "This might cost a little more than i expected but it really doesn't bother me. "
~guess I'm just jealous
:D

crash landing 04-19-2004, 03:58 PM if you are looking for that kind of power ..and it looks like you dont have any real worries about money..i would go for that 572 motor they have out..from what i have read it looks like straight raw power
fl elky 04-19-2004, 06:38 PM I agree with Elky Pete. I would go with the 383. In fact that is what I am doing with my 83. For the torque that is the motor. GMPP makes a crate motor P/N 12497317, that makes 435 fl. lbs. at 4000 rpm; but the g :o ood news that is makes over 400 ft. lbs. between 2500 and 4000 rpms. Now that will turn those tires quite well. Chevy High Performance magazine has good articles on that motor and you can get on their web site and down load what they did. When it was all said and done, it produced 491 horsepower and 500 ft. lbs. That is a smoken elky. 8)
Id go w/ a small block.. Alot easier fitting, alot less problems and you can get 500-600 horses w/ a well built sbc.. If you want that much hp tho, your gonna need to do something w/ the rear tires. The biggest ive got to fit under is 275x60x15 BARELY and those wont handle 325 hp ;/ So you might wanna tub it and put some real meat under there, and some cheater slicks for the street :D
PunkRican 04-21-2004, 06:24 PM ey i have a nice cheap little 350 here you could throw in it and then strap and bolt on whatever ur little heart desires maybe?
ronjr@ronsraceshop.com 04-29-2004, 01:07 AM you could get a ls1 with a six speed (on ebay for around 3-5k) and put a magnuson on top. or, you can get a 427 sbc short block and a pair of our arao heads http://www.ronsraceshop.com/companies/araoeng_chevySB.php
both combos would have more pick up than you need.
crash landing 04-29-2004, 02:10 AM i suggested the 572 on a previous post , i think if money is no object go with that...however they are right, a small block is a good alternative. Easy to find parts , less problems. Try looking for a 400 small block.. Thats what i went with i bored it out..used 5.7 liter rods..dont rebuild it with the stock rods of a 400 , they wear out the bores really fast...Or you should go with a 350 or 383..can t go wrong with a small block...
dennis68 05-02-2004, 09:28 PM $$$ no object, go original. Build a stroker LS1 and turbo it. I gaurantee you will be the envy of every automotive guy on the planet. A stroker LS will easily put out 450HP, add a couple of turbos turned down for the street, maybe 5lbs/boost. Thats a 600HP street motor you can drive evryday.
