Have been collecting parts in anticipation to installing a 28 spline -3.73 posi.

I now have a 2.43 (?) lsd posi- 26 spline unit that came with the vehicle. The unit that will be going in is a GM locker-28 spline.

Will be installing a mild 350 with a 200r4 trans and want to be sure of a decent "hook-up"
once the accelerator goes to the floor.

We are looking for 28 spline used axles in good condition towards this end.

What length should the axles be? What vehicles would be good donors for these axles?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best Regards,

Tony

I have 28 splines axles in my el camino, I don't know the length but you can get the axles from a s10, f body (90s 7.5). You could go to a driveshaft or machine shop get them cut and use c clip eliminator or get cut and groved for the c clips. Hope that helps.

Yeah...It sure does help... Thank You!

I have an opportunity to purchase 28 spline axles for a '93 - '99 Z - 28 Camaro.

Is there a possibility that they might fit my ' 80 Caballero? (7.5" - 7.625" rear)

Thanks!

There are 2 different carriers depending on the gearset. That is to say, you can't just change the ring gear if going from 2.43 to a 3.73. You have to change the carrier as well. I don't know if that difference in carriers uses the same lenght axles or not. Might be worth looking into.

Thanks for the come back John!

You may not have noticed that I had indicated that the 3.73's will be in a 7 1/2" GM posi locker carrier that is destined for the Caballero.

I'm still curious to know if the 28 spline axles from a '93 Z-28 Camaro will fit my application. Could sure use some help looking for "donor axles"!

Thanks!

Just get Grand National axles, they're a direct swap and perfect fit. Thicker also, No custom made stuff is necessary.

Stock G-body axles are 28 7/16" long. From what I can find on the internet all the F-body axles for that year are 32" long. They won't work unless you shorten them which costs quite a bit. And even then the diameter might be different. Just get some Grand National axles.

Thanks for the replies,Folks! I am familiar with what's on the market for new units, just trying to save a buck(s) here and there.Between the trans rebuild and the 350 rebuild, headers, cutouts, tires, carb, etc, yada, yada. Well, you know how it goes! lol

We have lots of salvage yards up here in the North East...I was hoping to be able to score a couple of used axles in good condition.

If anyone here can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

If your looking for 8.5 GN axles thats the place to find them. Probably wont find any laying around a junkyard anymore.

So...I located (2) Grand National 28 spline axles. My posi carrier is a 26 spline unit.

Do I have any options of turning my posi unit into a 28 spline?

Here are a couple of pics:

Tony I don't do very many differentials however if you look at your bottom picture you will notice two gears just outside the spring plates for the posi, those gears will determine the axle spline count if you can find those gears with 28 splines that fit that carrier just swap the gears.
Cost is arbitruary sometimes it's cheaper to spend the money and buy new in the long run but this is your choice and your money all we can do is advise based on our experiences and each one is bound to be a liitle different.

Thanks for the comeback and the sound advice!

Yes...I was hoping someone would suggest just what you did. That occurred to me also when I decided NOT to install the 28 spline G80 gov locker I have, due to several bad raps I have read about breakage, etc.

I wish I knew if there was a direct swap(part #,vendor, etc.) for those internal gears...I would swap them in a heartbeat!

If anyone else here has any positive feedback towards that end, I would sure love to hear it!

Thanks Again for all your help Folks!
