Would like to convert an '87 automatic to manual transmission. Do you know of any year El Camino or other GM model that could be used for parts for this conversion? Thanks!

Any early model 78-81 A/G body GM's, Malibu's are a good source. Most of the pieces for the conversion can still be purchased new through aftermarket resources. The only hard piece to find is an original style bellhousing. Be prepared to spend some money for the original pieces, just saw a bellhousing for a 153 tooth flywheel sell for $250 the other day on Ebay, thats $65 more than what I paid for my 168 tooth flywheel bellhousing 2 years ago, and mine is in perfect condition, the one on Ebay wasn't. If you want to do a lil mix and match, an F-body Lakewood bellhousing can be used, but you will need to use the hydraulic clutch linkage from an F-body also. You don't want to use the Saginaw 4 speed, use a Borg Warner Super T-10 or a Muncie M-22. I wouldn't attempt this unless you plan on spending some money and know what your doing, or know someone with some drivetrain experience. Transminsion output shaft yoke will need to be changed (t-10 m22), original driveshaft probably won't work or take the torque if it does fit. And then you have to deal with the 7.5 rearend...it won't last long behind a 4 speed if the rest of the drivetrain has been changed for better performing parts and you don't baby it. 4,000 RPM holeshots is NOT babying it! 8) However, if you plan on having a pretty much stock engine, the stock set up will surfice, with a lil minor tweaking.

Manual transmissions were available 1978-81. I changed my '84 SS over to a 5 speed. If you do your homework first (see attached link), have all the parts and tools needed, and take your time, it's really pretty easy.

I did the same swap to my 80 Elky in 84 when it was easy to get everything you needed from a donor F-body. I really liked that hydraulic clutch setup. It's getting difficult to find a complete donor car these days. By scrounging the swap meets and the ebay junkyards you'll probably find what you need.

The 78-81 Monte Carlo also came with the same manual transmissions as the Malibu and El Camino. The 3-speed manual tranny was standard for the V6. The 4-speed manual tranny was standard for the V8.
