Guys,
I am on a tight budget and need to change the gears out in my elky (2.73) I have found a 7.5" 1/2 ton pickup rearend with posi and 3.73 gears. Can I just pull those gears and carrier out and put them in my elky? PS the pickup rear end is in good condition (30,000 mile) Thanks

I have never heard of this being done. What year pick-up is it? When I changed first time, I found a Monte Carl SS rear end and did the complete rear end swap. I think I paid $250? It's a lot easier than swapping out the Carrier and Pinion gear. A carrier swap needs a lot of special tools and experience, both of which I was lacking.

What kind of pick up has the 7.5 in it?
BUT - if that is what it is - the answer is maybe. What spline axles are in the pickup? The gears would work but you will definitely need to know the spline count on the axles before a decision on the carrier.

Many of the S10 pickups have the 7.5 rear but are usually 26 spline axles, while the Elcamino (and other G-bodies) have 28 I believe.. To my knowledge all full size 1/2 ton pickups have the 8.5 gear and housing so be sure of what you are getting before you buy.......Dan

I think its el caminos and other g bodys have the 26 spline axles while the s-10s have 28 spline axles, . Changing carriers is not a little job , new bearings have to be pressed on and the carrier has to be shimmed properly or you will be doing it again . Its easier to find a different rear end and swap it out then replace gears and carrier

leogexx is right about the spline count. El Caminos = 26 spline.
Changing the gears and carrier out are not that hard but if you haven't done it he is right about the setup also. It is not something that the first timer usually has much luck with unless there is someone to help that has been there.

You will be much better off waiting to find a deal on evil bay or craigs list unless you want to do it twice jmho woody out p.s. I found mine on craigslist 373 gears eaton posi drum to drum with brake lines for $550 you cant get the gears and posi for that and then you still need bearings ect look around they are out there
