I have a 72 el camino, and I'm not sure what style I have. It is your basic body style, non SS, but it has factory round gauges. Large tach and speedo in the middle, with small ammeter on the left, and small fuel level and temp on the right. It also has tilt wheel and factory a/c. Is this a el camino custom, or something else? Will the VIN tell me what it is? If so, where can I get the info to decode it. Thanks for any help you could give me.

Hey Tom. Sounds like you got a nice 3rd gen Elky. Got any pic's?? I'm kinda paritial to that year....

Anyway, I'm not a 100% sure, but it looks like you have an El Camino Custom model. You can check the VIN. The first digit is a "1" that defines the division of "Chevrolet". The second "digit" will define the "series". It is usually a letter. A "C" indicates a base El Camino. A "D" indicates a Malibu, Custom El Camino, or Concours. I'll bet you have this one.

If you want me to look up the rest of your VIN, just post it and I'll look it up. Or others will jump on this post and break it down. There are a lot of really smart people on this forum.

Good luck

:) Thanks JW. It is a "D" as the second letter in the VIN indicating a Custom model. That's what I thought it was.

I believe I posted a picture to the gallery and in my profile, but it isn't showing up yet. I'm new to the forum and still trying to figure things out. I'll check in the morning and see if my pictures show up.

Thanks again JW

Tom

Ok so now you know it is a Custom. Now all customs did not have the same options so you really still do not know much. Much the same on My 71 it is a custom V-8 other information on the cowl tag i know and not much else.

The damn axle does not even have a number stamped on it..
