: junkyards
RATCAMINO 04-12-2004, 04:39 PM anyone finding any el camino's in any junkyards?
i was at the u-pull-it in aurora and they have a '86 elky there,305,auto,blue interior, yellow exterior, looks like someone tried to convert it into a ss clone. also they have a 86 or 87 monte ss aerocoupe along with a couple more montes
also another place out by me,southwest auto in lockport has a few g-body montes including a 87 ss,and they also have a 69 el camino with 350 badges but has what looks to be an olds motor under the hood.
theres a couple by me but theyve been picked over pretty good. anyone have anything else to add to this list?
JDLCam 04-16-2004, 06:14 PM Hey Nick, thanks for the listing - I haven't even been to a yard yet, the nearest one is only open during the week, daytime. This is a great forum topic though. Hopefully, I'll be able to add to it now that the weather is shaping up.

James84Elky 04-16-2004, 07:52 PM :( I live in Pittsburg, in the San Francisco bay area. there are no junk yards around here with any vehicles in he mid aor late 80's in which to find parts. I need a lot of misc. parts to my 84 elky and am havingt a very hard time to find any at all. if i were to need any part of a front end, i would have to buy the whole thing to get one part.
I wish we as a club could put togather a hot line for just El Camino parts that we need so badly. i check the papers daily to find any wrecked elko's but there aren't any to find. what am i going to do to finnd small parts to complete the interior and detail the car as if it were new.
so, I ask you my borther elky owners, what can i do with my project car here in Pittsburg, CA
any ideas at all ??? :(
RATCAMINO 04-16-2004, 08:57 PM i just remembered another one. there's a 4th gen el camino classic for sale (don't know what year exactly) at a junkyard by me. the lower quarters need work and its missing most of the front clip and i think the engine's blown. theyre asking $600 for it but i dont know if theyre flexible on the price. might be a decent project or parts car at the very least.
hot 78 El Camino 04-16-2004, 10:55 PM hey everyone
Well up here in MN I don't think there are any in a junkyard. I have search many and have yet to find one. There is a place here called upullrparts and they seem to never get anything decent in for a car. So if anyone knows of any please let me know.
elcamino_gal 04-26-2004, 07:47 PM Every once in a while one of the many junkyards by my place will get an El Camino, but usually some one will pick it up right away.
 Laura
oddball383 04-27-2004, 05:08 PM Has anyone found any good floor pans for the drivers side behind the seat. I live in Jefferson and there are no camino's around here with good floor pans. Leave an email @ JKowalski@matcmadison.edu. Thanx
eighty_five_el_camino 05-02-2004, 02:17 AM Oddball,
The Ranch in Johnson Creek had several that I looked over.
I believe both had the floor pans
one had a good 350
the other one, some moron took a baseball bat to after he got frustrated.
"had" a good body.
I used to live in Jefferson. not nowbecause of the inlaws...lol
I am in Orfordville and we have a good yard here out in the woods but only open on Saturdays. All older stuff, a couple of Elks (5th gen) that are good parts cars, a few M/C's. (Murray's Salvage: (608) 879-2525)
the guy works at GM during the week.
Do you know Mark Ihlenfeld (possibly spelled incorrectly)
a good guy to know in town, helped me quite a bit.
I bought the blue one that was over by Coletta's
dude78ss 06-30-2004, 02:58 PM There is a junk yard just down the road from me, actually approx. 5 blocks that has 2 fifth gen elks. I test drove the black 79SS about 3 years ago. Back then it had a 383 stroker. The engine is now gone but the body has some salvagable parts. The primer gray '80 is very rough but it is said to have a rebuilt motor in it. Since I have numerous engines, I walked on by. They might have more by now. I drive by it everyday when I go to work, the '80 is up front. Any questions, just ask me.
Elky77 06-30-2004, 09:50 PM Junk yards are an unusual type of source. They very seldom back off on their price. It's kind of like an antique shop for cars. You have to check them out every so often. The stock comes and goes.
If you have one around you, keep stopping in and asking about Elky's. They'll get to know you and you'll, sooner or later, get some good parts.
Besides, it's fun to cruise the car field and check out whats there.
Happy parts hunting,
Elky77
b4black 07-19-2004, 06:09 AM I was at Hub (near Lemont, IL) this weekend. They had 2½ 5th gens there. One had a wrecked front end, but otherwise pretty nice. Quite a few other G-bodies.
dark_saterday 09-11-2004, 11:15 PM yea i live in lemont area as well, go on 83, by the bridges, i think 83 and archer, and go to the 3 junkyards around there i kno hub has stuff, then the junkyard with the big fat guy with no shirt thats always eating chicken, and the one across the street u might be able to try , there all in a row
hope this helps
ElCafreak 09-12-2004, 08:01 AM Yea bone yards are touchy. They ussually have some favorite customers that they give first dibs of the cars coming in. I'm lucky because there are quite a few around me that have some pickings.
The next time ya'll stop in, ask them if they have the 800 number to check out other yards. I don't know what percentage of yards are connected, but if they are they can ussually find the parts you need.
I went by one yard here and low and behold there was a 59 sittin outside. I got in trouble for stopping to check it out, but my boss got over it! lmao
He just don't get it(snicker) Turns out that the yard owner kept that one! that bastard! lol

i havent been to cal-sag lately (the one with the shirtless fat guy eatin' chicken) but last time i was there all he had was a ratty picked-over '79 and i think an '81 that had a SS nose(also picked over). too expensive for me though,he wanted $75 for a rusted out tailgate for a dodge truck.
RATCAMINO 11-10-2004, 04:33 PM anyobdy into 2nd gen elkys? southwest auto salvage in joliet,IL just got in a '66 elky last week. looks like someone got it for the drivetrain and then junked it. looks like there's plenty of good parts left though. they still have the '69 elky too i mentioned above. other than that, nothing new out in this area..
johncgg 11-14-2004, 10:45 PM I got a couple clips from the bed off that yellow EC at the yard in Aurora. I am in Saint Charles. It's still there, but pretty picked over. It didn't look like it was a very good attempt at restoration.
There are more members in this area than I thought! I need to get on this forum more often....

I just remembered,my '85 elky has the rear bumper off that yellow one too, only it's been painted black. The previous owner put it on there. It looked great but someone backed into my rear bumper recently and now there's some pieces of yellow showing :x
RK-Carsen 04-09-2005, 04:27 PM I just stopped by a couple in the quad cities today. The U-pul A-part in Milan had a fifth gen that's been gone over pretty good. Still had the bed chrome, doors that could probably be fixed up, and a bench seat. They also had a regal and a monte that I didn't get a chance to look at.
I aslo stopped by the salvege place by the southpark mall. They've got a 4th gen you can see from the road. Not sure what year, it had buckets and a console. Guy there said they also had a few montes and buicks. I'll probably be going back again on tuesday. Took a few pictures if anyone's interested.
87ZZ4ELKY 05-01-2005, 06:51 PM Here in Wisconsin el camino's are kinda rare in junk yards.I look for other G-bodies,some such as the Cutlas wagon or Malibu wagon even have the same rear license plate holder for the tailgate.
Elkyone 08-05-2005, 09:07 PM Did the 86 have good doors?
RATCAMINO 08-06-2005, 11:41 PM which '86?
Elkyone 08-07-2005, 09:16 AM I should remember to look at the date posted, it was listed on teh first page I think April 2004.. so I guess it would be gone by now..
ElkyPete 08-07-2005, 10:16 AM Trucks are a big item here in Texas. I have no shortage of junk yards to go to and lots are 5 to 10 mins from home. Lots of Elkys but most have been ravaged so not a lot to choose from. 4th generation Elkys are really hard to get stuff for from anyplace even junk yards. Gives one the impression there are more of them rolling around than there are. There are just not that many 4th gens, lots of 5th gens some 3rd.
Rust is an issue in the local bone yards. If you find the part it very well could be rusted out or damaged by rust. Then you have the Mosquitoes, Wasps and snakes!

Sorry, its been long since crushed. Also a mini-update,hub auto in hinsdale IL has 5(!) 5th gens in stock at the moment.
ric's toy 08-10-2005, 09:13 AM I was out this weekend to a junkyard in Peoria. ran into a bunch of elky's around 15 or so at Calliers on farmington road by the speedway. they had 3 or 4 70-72's a couple 4th gen's and some5thgen's also and a bunch of g bodies. some were in decent shape some were wasted but all were pretty much complete. 8)
neonick 11-09-2005, 01:23 AM Im from the twin cities and have found 5th gen parts in a yard in French Lake, MN (cant remember the name) (western MN) and i have a freind who works in a yard in Hugo right off 35-E (again can't remember the name) and another guy that works there has about 5 or 6 5th gens pretty much whole but he is hard to get parts away from cuz he plans on doing something with them someday, but I got a tailgate off one for $75

I have known Mike (the owner of Hugo auto since the late 60's) there is another one on the north side of his lot, and has had bunch of different owners. The only one he has, he keeps inside is his '65 396 El Camino.
It's right on highway 61. I live near the Maplewood mall.
The one you say is in French lake is French lake auto. They use to be owned by Windy Hill auto (180 acres of '15-79) in Painsville, Mn, then in the 80's they sold French lake, last year he crushed every single car except his early '20's and older 8O  :( ........The best yard that I ever been to, and I have been to alot of them.
My wife and my first date was to Windy Hill's to get grille parts for my "47 International pickup, on Halloween, it's 100 miles from my house it the blizzard of '92, in a mini van with a air damn and ground affects. Hey.... When you need parts..You need them! :D
Pat
neonick 11-13-2005, 04:13 PM Yes I have been to windy hill before they crushed it (looking for parts for my dads 48 GMC) and I was there while they were crushing it (looking for parts for our 55 chevy belair). It was an amazing place, but i didn't know he used to own french lake auto too.
But French Lake is still open and last I was there (about 1/2 a year ago) they had a few elkys as I said and also some g-bodies. But funny thing, don't try driving all the way out there on Mondays cuz they are not open, wierd I know!
HemiTCoupe
My friend is dating/living with the daughter or sister (don't remember) of the owner of the hugo yard. Mabye were talking about different places cuz this one isn't very big, but the elkies belonged to someone who worked there and mabye there not even there anymore but yeah. I'll find some new info and get back to ya.
By the way I live in Arden Hills and work (sometimes) at Kath Auto Parts on Rice Street in Little Canada, know the place?
