: North Texas End of Year Plans
kenrogers1 11-04-2010, 06:57 AM It's been suggested and re-suggested that we here in the Metromess area celebrate the end of the season by getting together for a BBQ, Beer, & BS session. I've offered my place here in Joshua as an option, and we've discussed the lake house of cjlaketexoma as a prime location. Both have their advantages for select groups of members. Lets make a decision on the location, and get the final plans laid for this get-together! However, I would suggest that, rather than consider it a close-out, let's consider it a kick-off for a super strong 2011 season, an opportunity to lay out some planning for next year. Who's up for the get-together? Who has suggestions? Who wants to volunteer for specific parts of the plans? Let's hear it, North Texicans!...................Ken :texas:
rushgator 11-04-2010, 09:52 AM As far as location, I would prefer the lake, if Clay is willing to host. However, if it's in Joshua, I would still attend. So barring any major conflicts, I would be there either way. As far as food, we can all bring something such as meat and beverage of choice.
Terminator 11-04-2010, 10:22 AM Well... if my wife can come along, she would love the lake. She has often talked about going there. Psst... since we are Nawlin's Natives, she makes a hot @ss bowl of gumbo and jumbalaya.
rushgator 11-04-2010, 12:16 PM MMMMM...gumbo & jambalaya....:nanawrench:
By all means bring her, we want this to be a family type of gathering.
BTW, I've got a freezer full of german sausage and wild pig that we can grill.
cjlaketexoma 11-04-2010, 02:23 PM I can supply the place, gas grill, medium size charcoal grill. Lets watch the weather, north winds are not a happy thing out here at the lake when it starts getting cool, the wind runs right up the hill and hits where it hurts most, where everybody would be trying to hang on the 'lake side' of the house. So tell you what, we can tentatively plan on Saturday the 20th or Sunday the 21st, you can trailer it or drive it, we have room for whatever. If the weather gets nasty, then we have to look at after Thanksgiving, Dec 4th or 5th. OR, if the weather starts to get nasty for the 20th, then Joshua is possibly a back up plan for the 20th. Thoughts? And Terminator, I don't eat that hot stuff, but BRING IT. I bet you'll find some takers! ;)
Terminator 11-04-2010, 03:18 PM What? No Spicey Cajun Seafood? Then I guess I'll have to pick you up a Joes Crabshack Meal... Yuk!
rushgator 11-04-2010, 04:50 PM Please bring spicy cajun goodies. Cayenne pepper=goodness.:nanawrench:
My wife is a Texan with southern Louisianna relatives and all she knows how to cook is hot stuff. So, bring the fire, I'm not afraid. I'll bring the Rolaids.
Besides, hot food gives me an excuse to drink beer.
kenrogers1 11-05-2010, 09:33 AM SO - the 20th it is, at the Lake house! What say we get there around around 2, start cooking around 3:30 to 4, and be cleaned up by 6:30 to 7? Does that work for everyone. Takes me about 1 1/2 hours to cook ribs & baked beans - but will probably bring the beans with us to reheat.
X2 on the family plans - I strongly support that! Maybe the tsunami gunny can make it too, since it's not a car show, and the family is welcome (sorry, Gregg, I couldn't resist! :poke:). Are we to bring the crucks, or is that an optional necessity (and is that an oxymoron?)?................Ken
rushgator 11-05-2010, 09:47 AM I would say bring the Elky's if you can, but if you can't, that's no excuse to stay home. Come in whatever you can. With that being said, I may not be able to make the 20th. Was planning on leaving for Florida that day, but I may be able to push that back a day. We will see...would hate to miss hanging out with Ken after he eats a crock full of baked beans....:new_ukliam2:
cjlaketexoma 11-05-2010, 02:12 PM 20th is good; elco's are optional but a cool group car pic or two would be nice; family a +; no animals please; we will keep an eye on the weather - all this will be scrapped if weather looks like it will be cold north winds, keep that in mind. I'm bet'n it will be nice enough! Heck, it could be 90 degrees. We will take a hard look at the forecast on Nov 17th and call it one way or the other. Oh, if you have radio-controlled nitro cars (like the Revo), we play with those out here too! So bring'm along. I like your suggestions on start / finish time, Ken, we'll hold onto that as a general plan.
More on all this as we get closer.
tsunamigregg 11-05-2010, 05:26 PM Hey, miss a couple dozen shows, and don't weigh in on any posts for a couple weeks and all of a sudden I'm Ken's punching bag. I'm in; the family's in; the car is out. Too far for the family and I to drive seperately. Just post up the times and if we need to bring any eats or $ for the eats that someone else is already making up.
Terminator 11-05-2010, 11:23 PM If I bring along my little boy (7), I will have to come in the Goat.
DONE DEAL DONNY 11-05-2010, 11:47 PM I'll be there in there in the yellow sunshine or the red devil dirt!!! Looking forward to it!!!:nanawrench:
Donny
kenrogers1 11-06-2010, 08:39 AM Where are the rest of us North Texicans & Southern Oklahomans? Grate Gonzo, Marshall.Pixley, MelissaDuncan, SteelBeast, Carr7640, elkyvette, PaulEdwards, Norm1969, Texaselky, all the others who we've 'knowed' & 'showed' with these years. This is not an all-inclusive list (just those who I could think off off the top of my ravaged brain, I'll think of more later to put on the spot) - you all know who you are and that you're welcome! All of you who came out and supported us in the Texas Get-Togethers early this year. Come on Down..............Ken
Terminator 11-06-2010, 11:21 AM The 20th sounds like a winner with good food (spicy) and good people (spicy too), so should be the weather. We are looking forward to this event.
grate gonzo 11-06-2010, 11:33 AM Sounds good... can't wait for all the good times to come!
elkyvette 11-09-2010, 01:32 PM Ken & everyone,
I am trying to get set up to be there. That date is my F-I-L's birthday, and since my M-I-L just passed away we have to be sensitive here (not my strength). At this time it LOOKS like we will do a family gathering on Sunday leaving Saturday available. If that is the case my bride, myself, and Elky are going to make every effort to be there. If we get there I will try to get my wife to make up some of her famous "Better Than Sex Cake". I know, you'll be the judges of that.
Should have a real version of my proposed logo by then. Am trying to get a .pdf ready to post on the site in the next couple of days.
Ken, I might try to hook up with you and caravan up. (I guess anyone Southwest of Arlington might do the same) We'll talk about it.
Hope to see everyone soon.
bill
kenrogers1 11-09-2010, 02:06 PM I will try to get my wife to make up some of her famous "Better Than Sex Cake"
I'll probably get slapped up-alongside the head for asking, but - what the devil is a "sex cake"?.................Ken  :texas:
elkyvette 11-09-2010, 02:15 PM Ken,
The full name is "Better than sex cake", although there a more bland name that I don't recall (not as memorable). This cake has like a box of powdered sugar and about a dozen eggs, really nasty stuff, I love it. She usually only makes it for me at Christmas, but I will try to talk her into it, you guys will LOVE it.:inlove:
I'll keep you posted,
bill
skinyfisher 11-09-2010, 05:34 PM What Florida can't come!!!!!!!!!!!!!! opps can't make it will be preparing for Rushgators arrival in FL for the TURKEY ROD RUN on the 25th.
hope to see you Rush, Lenny is doing the calling PM him your cell.
rushgator 11-10-2010, 09:29 AM You can come, but you have to bring some crabs and shrimp.:poke:
I'll be sure to get Lenny the info...I met a couple of the Florida NECOA members last year at TRR, hope to meet a bunch more this year!:nanawrench:
cjlaketexoma 11-10-2010, 02:39 PM You-all can have all that crabs and mud bugs and pig meat and all that other stuff (especially the HOT stuff)! I have a MONSTER sweet tooth - bring on the cake!!
Ok, fine, I might try the pig. . . maybe a bite of this'er that, if it's not hot (no, I won't believe you)
Watching the weather, and hoping for the best...
DONE DEAL DONNY 11-10-2010, 07:22 PM Who like bologna????
I'll bring cheese too!!
Donny
rushgator 11-15-2010, 10:26 AM DDD, be sure to bring a nice cheese log...:poke:
Clay, saw the weather report for Saturday. No rain, mid to lower 70's, sunny, and a south wind. Other than the wind part, it looks good. At least it's a south wind. If the forecast holds, I'll wash the Elky and thaw out the hog on Thursday. Planning on bringing wild hog pulled pork sandwiches and german bratwursts. If it's a go, let us know how to get to your party pad.
Terminator 11-16-2010, 10:21 AM What is the gameplan for this Saturday?
Janet is planning to make Nawlin's style gumbo! We will bring some paper bowls, plastic spoons, paper towels, a crock pot to keep the gumbo warm (hot), and cooler for drinks.
It sounds like everyone is making this a Texas-sized smorgishboard!
I just need an ETA and someone directions. Are we meeting up at CJ's Lake Texahoma's place? I just clicked his map so I can easily get there from US 75.
cjlaketexoma 11-16-2010, 07:06 PM Game plan is..... I think we are go, weather looks good, but call me cautious, before I pull the trigger and get folks to rounding up stuff and making definite plans, I want to be as sure as possible, check back tomorrow and get the for-sure. Directions are on my signature, btw, for those looking: www.texomavacation.com (http://www.texomavacation.com), and click on Getting Here. Stand by for an update tomorrow night, but unless you see some big change that says 'cold north wind on Saturday', we are go! We'll get more into specifics tomorrow night / Thursday, but in general, for planning purposes, noonish to dark would be the timeframe. If you show up earlier, I'll put you to work - unless you're coming out early to start cooking stuff to feed me!
marshall.pixley 11-17-2010, 05:23 AM wow, a day that i have an all day interview to work on the polland special and everyone else has an amazing last blast.... and "better than sex" cake....:let_it_all_out:
elkyvette 11-17-2010, 08:44 AM Guys,
Because of family issues, I am not going to be able to make the gathering, was seriously looking forward to seeing the lake place and everyone. Not sure the fact we are not coming is a big deal EXCEPT Marshall seems to be looking forward to the "Better than Sex Cake" I was going to have my wife bring with us, and rightfully so, it's GREAT! Will try to bring it to a future gathering.
Looks like the weather is going to be great, you guys all have a great time, it's OK to talk bad about me, I expect it.
bill
cjlaketexoma 11-17-2010, 01:30 PM Ok North Texas members - and anyone else who wants to make the trip, we are go for this Saturday 11/20. Here's the general plan - I'm making my lake-front rental property available for members to come and have a last fall fling before the cold sets in.
Notes:
~Somebody has to be in charge, and that's me. I can make or change any rule!
~Drive what you want, but elco's are always nice to see
~This is a family gathering, and as such, I expect everyone to be on their best behavior
~This includes an emphasis on minimal alcohol consumption.
~If you bring it, plan on hauling it off
~No pets, please.
I have a fair size shop here, and we'll have the old ping-pong table set up. We also have a set of horse shoes. If you want to fly a kite, the weather looks to be good for that, you can drive over to the spillway / boat launch, a 1/2 mile away, and fly them there, that's what we do. Often, the guys with remote control plane are over there, but you never know. Probably going to be a bit windy for that.
We are planning an afternoon of hanging out. You can bring something to grill, bring nothing, eat first, it's all good. Bring your own drinks / snacks. If you have a favorite chair, bring it, but I have tons of them. We have a propane grill and a charcoal grill, and charcoal. I imagine my son-in-law and I will break out the nitro R/C cars, and run them around. Bring good shoes to walk down to the water. I think the fishing is over for the year, but hey, if you want to, you can. If all goes well, and the wind isn't going at it, we may have a marshmellow roast at the end of the day, so bring a bag if you're going to join in. This will be about dark time, if we do it.
If anyone has any specific questions, they can feel free to send me a message here on NECOA.
We are looking very forward to having our NECOA friends out! Who knows, you could be part of the 'first annual ..?.. event'.
Oh, timing, again - noonish to 6-7 PM. If you show up early, I'll put you to work. Directions are on www.texomavacation.com (http://www.texomavacation.com) under 'getting here'.
Lastly - we will expect participants to be respectful of each other, and the property. I would hate to have to ask anyone to leave, but I will if that's what I have to do.
rushgator 11-17-2010, 02:02 PM So...it on!!!:nanawrench:
I've already got the pig thawing and we'll start slow cooking it Friday. I'll bring buns for the pork sandwiches and brats (as in german sausages, not kiddos). Looking forward to it! See everyone Saturday.
Bill, sorry you can't make it, but family is first. I understand.
DONE DEAL DONNY 11-17-2010, 02:51 PM Guys,

i would be looking forward to it if i didnt have that all day interview.... dang plane.
Terminator 11-17-2010, 09:26 PM I'm certainly exited about going except CJ says no animals/pets. Does that include Goats?? because 3 of us are coming and the Elky is only a 2 seater... and I'm not riding in the back!
Thanks for the info and hosting us, CJ. Fingers are X.
rushgator 11-18-2010, 01:28 PM As long as your Goat doesn't poop on Clay's lawn, you'll be OK.
Terminator 11-18-2010, 01:50 PM As long as your Goat doesn't poop on Clay's lawn, you'll be OK.
That wasn't poop is was skid marks:driving: LOL!
rushgator 11-19-2010, 12:51 PM I may not be able to make this after all. Seems there's been a death in the family, and the memorial is scheduled for 2:30 Saturday. Might could come later in the day, or would that be too late? I would most likely not be able to be there before 4pm. :???:
cjlaketexoma 11-19-2010, 02:12 PM Oh, hey, no worries! Come on out whenever, and sorry about your situation. I expect folks to randomly stop by and hang for anytiime from noon to 6. Come on out, the weather is supposed to be really nice in the afternoon, except for a little south wind, which is no problem. We'll be sitting around, watching stuff cook, playing ping-pong, watching my son-in-law sand on my el camino (or so he says, we'll see), hanging out at the water, telling untrue stories, etc. If the wind will calm down, it's supposed to be around 15 mph tomorrow, we'll make a fire late in the day and whoever wants to can hang a bit into the evening and cook some marshmellows. Seriously, we've been going nuts around here over one thing and another for what seems like months, and this is just a great excuse to kick back and have friends around, so you and all who want to, come on by!
rushgator 11-19-2010, 02:30 PM If the wind will calm down, it's supposed to be around 15 mph tomorrow, we'll make a fire late in the day and whoever wants to can hang a bit into the evening and cook some marshmellows.
After tomorrow, that will be some much needed kick back time...will plan on coming out as soon as all the family stuff is wrapped up. Won't be there as soon as I'd like, but I'll be there! Don't eat all the gumbo before I arrive.:texas:
Terminator 11-19-2010, 03:57 PM The Gumbo is smelling GOOD! I am trying not to do any taste-testing. Who is bringing some alligator??
rushgator 11-19-2010, 04:00 PM How about a 'gator bringing some pig?:poke:
I'll be there late, but God willing, I'll be there.
kenrogers1 11-19-2010, 04:21 PM I've spent the last hour rubbing the 3 racks of baby-backs - they have really, really been enjoying the spice combination, and they WILL be falling off the bone tender tomorrow. We're also bringing a gallon of home-baked beans and a half gallon of potato salad. Has anybody thought of desserts? (I mean besides the Miller High Life!)
This is going to be a GREAT way to end the show season and get started on the planning for next year. I just wish we could convince more of the North Texas members to join us for the food, fun, and fellowship of this gathering. Maybe we can work on drawing them in for next year. I'm going to plan on trying to meet a lot of them personally early next year. Anybody want to volunteer to go with me for the meetings?..................Ken
Gater' - Very sorry to hear of your family's loss. Hope you can make it after all, but we understand that family is the most important anchor we have. We'll see you if you can make it for the eating - and 3:30 to 4 sounds about right. Are you still planning on bringing the pig?
Terminator 11-19-2010, 04:41 PM I am not liking the idea of leaving the elky at home. I bet I'll miss out on some picturesque opportunities of the "elky round-up" plus I didn't have time to wash the goat... still bringing the camera though.
Terminator 11-19-2010, 10:01 PM Okay guys... just finished up 16 quarts of Nawlin's Style Gumbo. Got the whole neighborhood sniffing around. Y'all come hungry. We should be there before 1pm.
rushgator 11-20-2010, 08:40 AM I've got the wild pig pulled pork in the crock pot all ready to go. Should be there by 4:30 hopefully.
tsunamigregg 11-20-2010, 09:52 AM Leaving between 12:00 and 1:00; should be there by 3:00
kenrogers1 11-20-2010, 09:56 AM Except for the Triple D - Donny pulled his back the wrong way, and cannot make the food fest. He's currently got the choke system figured out on his El Camino, but had to take a break to rest his back before he can finish. Let's all wish the best for him - hoping that his back heals enough for him to make the work scene on Monday.
As for me and my family, we're departing home in about 15 minutes, should get us there around 2:15 to 2:30 - ribs take 1 1/2 hours to cook, and serving should begin between 4 & 4:30 - just in time for the 'Gater!..............Ken
Terminator 11-22-2010, 11:07 AM It was one heckuva party. CJ and his wife were great hosts. The food was awesome and the kids had a blast. It's going to be hard to top it. We definitley need to do it again.
See you guys "on the road". Get well Triple D.
tsunamigregg 11-22-2010, 05:46 PM The company, the chow and the scenery; all well worth the trip. Great see you all.
kenrogers1 11-22-2010, 07:24 PM Go to the site below if you want to view photos from the cook-out. This was certainly a pleasant way to close out the 2010 car show season for some of us who me together throughout the year. Thanks so much to Clay and his wonderful wife and family for hosting the event. Next year will be bigger and better - I just KNOW it!..............Ken

I would almost bet that the membership would gather for a Spring "Kick-Off" to the Car Show season. That may be pretty early for me, however, necessitating the use of your large shop. My season will begin the 3rd week of February, with the Dallas Autorama show. I was hoping some others will join me there?.............Ken

tsunamigregg 11-23-2010, 05:04 PM I'm up for entering both my Elkys in the Ft Worth Show as part of a NECOA and/or ECC club setup; I just gotta light a fire at HoH to make sure car two is done in time. Who's in?
kenrogers1 11-23-2010, 06:20 PM That's Great news, Gregg! I'll put in a hurry up for you when I pick my cruck up later in the week. We can take the events by storm - but be sure to enter as soon as possible................Ken
Terminator 11-24-2010, 03:53 PM That is a ISCA 3 day event like the old "World of Wheels" car shows. I don't think my elky is up to par with those $$$ candy, chrome, and mirrored displays.
