The Caprice Composite headlights are TOO BIG! You will need some composites headlights from a Chevy Celebrity are the right size.It is a tideous fabrication.Just have to take your time and be patient.I bought a 4 headlight header panel from the junkyard to practice on.

Absolutely right! Lots of hard work, but rewarding appearance change.

Ok guys...I was doing a search on composite headlight conversions and ran across this thread...so I'm bring it back to life.

I've got a 87 Choo Choo that I'm trying to convert to composites. I've already picked up a pair of 87 Celebrity lights, buckets and wiring harness.

I've started to remove the nose to get to all the brackets and removed the drivers bucket & light. Talk about some "custom" brackets on the original install. Nothing more than 1/8" sheet metal formed to attach the original buckets to the header panel.

What did you guys use? The original SS buckets or the Celebrity buckets?

Anybody have any pictures?

This is a conversion that's on my list of things to do, but preempted by motor and transmission swap for this year. So I haven't taken a real look at the lights.

Anyway, I'd guess the approach would be to make some custom brackets of your own to make the Celebrity lights work. Probably wouldn't look any worse than what the General did.

Well...I finally decided to get going on the conversion. I Plan on doing some test fitting today while I wait around for new rain gutters to be installed. I've taken lots of before & after pix to help document the process for all of you that would like to attempt the same thing.

Here's a teaser picture...

The Choo Choo headlight brackets should give me lots of room for adjustments:

Here's the problem I'm having right now. With the original 4 bucket set-up low beam is the two outside headlight and high beam is all four lights. With the composite lights it's either the lows or the highs ,but never all four bulbs  Is this the way Chebby Celebrity lights normally operate?

That sounds feasible. I've seen "kits" on eBay that you install to have all 4 on at once.

I wanted to have all four lights on with the high beam setting. I visited an electrical shop that does wiring for police/fire vehicles and they gave me the easy solution: Attach a diode (basically a one-way wiring device) from the high beam hot wire over to the low beam hot wire. This diode will allow power to flow from the high beam when they are on, over to the low beam and light them up. But it will not let power flow from the low beam over to the high beam when you only are using low beam setting. This makes a great appearance improvement and took only 30 minutes after they explained it to this dummy (me) and even gave me the two diodes for free! You can buy the diodes at NAPA or other quality parts shops. Good luck on your conversion!
