I am going to be redoing my entire brake system with new rotors, pads, lines, hoses, master cylinder (already done), etc. The stuff on the car currently works but the lines are rusty, hoses dry and everything is just wore out. I would like to redo the entire suspension and brakes on this vehicle and be done with that part with no worries. I was looking at buying new calipers and painting them to keep them from rusting again. How are plain remanufactured calipers from Auto Zone for $10 a piece? http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Duralast-Reman-Brake-Caliper-Front/1980-Chevrolet-El-Camino/_/N-ilz7rZ8knro?counter=0&itemIdentifier=208785_0_5913_
Are they any good or am I better off getting something else? The car currently stops ok but it could GREATLY use a better braking system. I do not have nearly the budget for a Baer brake system or anything like that. I do plan to go with stainless braided hoses to help some and nice pads but not sure on the calipers and rotors.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help!

I wouldn't buy a valve stem cap from Auto Zone. They are pretty cheap everywhere else tho. They used the same calipers on Camaro's and S-10's and who knows what else. Thats probably why they are so inexpensive.:texas:

I've bought calipers from Advance Auto that work normally. For new steel lines (or stainless lines) I buy from Inline Tube, which is near the Detroit area. I believe inlinetube.com will get you to their site, or you can search online, like Google. The stainless braided/shielded hoses are a good idea, and usually make For a firmer pedal.

I've also bought calipers from Carquest, but don't know if they are in your area. A bit more expensive, but likely better quality.

Classic Performance Products lists a replacement metric caliper with 20% more stopping power then the stock caliper. It lists for $59.00 each and has a part # of CP412526. I have not used these but was thinking of trying them when I redo my 81 El Camino.

Thanks for the info guys! Now I know you say that S-10, Camaro's and such are the same brakes but what years? On Classic Performance Products site it does not list any 5th Gen El Camino's. Their big bore metric GM caliper is showing 72 El Caminom, is this the same?

I was looking in a catalog. They list them for78-88 mid-size and '83-02 S10. Part # CP412526. You can call the tech line and ask, 1-800-522-5004.

Ok I see that the metric one will work. I am going to buy these things and try them out. It will be about 2 weeks before I buy them but I will definitely update you guys on how these things work!
I was going to go with stainless braided hoses but for now I will buy the stock rubber hoses until I can afford the $100 to get nice ones. Seems that $60 per caliper is not bad since they come with brake pads already. How good these pads are I don't know but I am sure they are OEM or basic ones which I will upgrade one day as well.
Now I need to find out about brake rotors and look for good stock ones or decent slotted ones. :)
