Greetings:

I was thinking about upgrading my 64 Drums to power and maybe I could live with that untill I save up enough for a Disc kit. Would it be a waste of time? Maybe I could find a good used booster that would fit my master cylinder and see if I like it. Whadya think? any used For Sale?

Not sure on the 2nd gen Elky's, but I had a '72 Elky with power drum brakes that I was using as a "donor" for my current '72. I'll tell you, it was scary stopping the power drum compared to the power disc's on my current '72.

Just my 2 cents worth, but I would rather see you go for the power disc's as a one time conversion.

Thanks JW:

I was kinda leanin that way but didn't know if Power Drums were anywhere near comparable on these chassis. Guess I'll keep savin for a front kit. One other thing I was wondering about is with front discs only, is the proportioning valve hard to set up and does it require a lot of adjustment? Because I dont want front brakes only.

I was lucky enough to have some one else who was more qualified to help with the brakes, so for him, it was pretty straightforward.

I'm going to let others on this forum go into more detail for you.

Sound ok??

Yes, any help would be appreciated. I could't find too many brake "threads" here, maybe I wasn't looking in the right place. I'm sure many owners have upgraded with these kits and some pros and cons of availabe systems would be helpful. I am familiar with the tall spindle/modified upper A-arm (Hotchkiss) route but want an application with minimum modifications.

Just an update;

I went to 'Pull n Save' and pulled a 9" booster off a 89 Blazer($6.50), fabbed a bracket and two rods. Didn't even crack my hydraulic system.
What Fun, stops 10 times better. Now I can wear out my new shoes and cylinders before I convert to Disc. :)

Wow, that is a deal. Big difference, huh? Good for you and your Elky.
