: 229 dist. question
palolobill 11-28-2010, 07:44 PM Changing dist. carb, and manifold on 229 v-6 semi even fire.I haven't found any info one where #1 is on the dist.except Chevrolet Power which states #1 is closest to the cap locating notch.Reading all forums on the 229 chevy v-6 I haven't seen any info about location of # 1 on dist. besides where roter faces on tdc 1 but if the motor is a semi even then #1 has to be more specific .does anyone know MAHALOS
CoyoteOn2 11-28-2010, 11:51 PM I'm surprised that you haven't gotten some kind of answer
to your question in 4 hours.
But don't let that discourage you about ECC, usually questions
are somewhat answered in the neighborhood of an hour.
Rather than tring to put into words or explain it,
they say, "pictures are worth a 1000 words, SO ,
here is my attempt at showing it to you.

matty man 11-29-2010, 04:14 AM Hey Coyote,, isn`t the 229 Chevy cylinders 1,3,5 on the drivers side? Palolbill,, is your distribitor in the rear of the motor? (looks like a Buick V-6 diagram) I just put a 4.3lt in my Roedo and used my 229 V-6 HEI distribitor and put the #1 on the front (drivers side) worked well,, matty man
CoyoteOn2 11-29-2010, 07:45 AM :dontknow:
NOW I'M REALLY CONFUSED
I know there are two, an EVEN FIRE, and an ODD FIRE engine,
maybe I got the wrong Motor.
As I said -- What do I know?
You may be correct, I just searched GM V6 229 Firing Order,
I know Buick is also GM, but this link shows
1984 Chevrolet El Camino, ??? Did they put a Buick Engine
in the El Camino? ( The Buick Engine is a 231 LD5 ci Chevy is 229 LC3)

palolobill 11-29-2010, 08:53 AM Mahalos for your response but what I was concerned about is if the firing order is 132 and 108 degrees wouldn't the dist have to be installed in relation to that on a 4.3 and on all v-8s the firing order or degrees of firing are evenly spaced so #1 could be any where on cap relating to TDC of motor.Thee V-6 semi even would have to be according to position on dist. according to what degree .Mahalos
CoyoteOn2 11-29-2010, 09:56 AM Well, That answers that and confirms I
didn't, or don't understand your question.
So no harm, no foul, and the game moves
to the next Inning.

Chilton shows this.If what you found says #1 is closest to distributor locating tab turn the cap upside down and look at the tab and use the one closest to it.If each one on either side look the same distance I would use the one clockwise to it.Some manufacturers mark #1 no the outside of the cap terminal.
goodcruiser 11-29-2010, 11:57 AM I don't know but maybe this will help.

Coyote yes they put the Buick 231 V6 in the El camino as a matter of fact my 82 Caballero has it and if your not sure which is which all you have to do is look at the distributor the Chevy 229 is at the back and Buick 231 is at the front of the engine.

palolobill 11-29-2010, 09:14 PM Mahalos for all the info my thoughts have been answered and I will try to install all my parts (manifold, carb. and dist.) removing all computer related parts and I'll let everyone how it went. Again Mahalos and Aloha for everyones heip
palolobill 12-07-2010, 02:04 AM Howzit going just finished test driving my 83 el camino with 229 v-6 chevy.took a day and a half to change the manifold carb and dist. and what a huge difference.it was running rough and my friend tried to tune it up and when i told him since he couldn't decode the problem i would change the manifold carb dist to get rid of all the computer stuff.and he tells me i need buick dist thats when he told me he was going by buick specs. for trouble shooting my car. thats when i realized even lic. shops don't know the differnce between the chevy and buick but anyway it now runs like a totally different vehicle.why it took longer than i thought was the manifold gasket.it seemed too thick and i couldn't put the bolts in both sides .i removed the gasket (sides only ends are just rtv )and tried to bolt it up and it did easily so the next day i bought another set and gasket material and i decided to make my own.it worked.it has so much more power runs good when cold or hot which it never did before.reading all of your responses really helped and i just wanted to thank everyone for the info. Much Mahalo to you all and MELE KALIKIMAKA
