: Window Crank removal

There is some sort of clip or something holding this bugger on. I've tried to get at it with a screwdriver and even extra small needle nose pliers, but no dice.
My Chilton's manual says i need some special tool but I have not been able to find it in stores or online.
Surely someone around here has pulled one of these guys off before. Please Help.

leogexx 12-11-2010, 03:49 PM Any autoparts place should have the tool to remove the clip for under $10. It takes seconds to remove the clip and window crank if you have the right tool.
goodcruiser 12-11-2010, 04:08 PM This should be the tool that you need. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Tools-and-Garage-Equipment/Window-Handle-Remover-Tool/_/N-25tn
DON BLACK 12-11-2010, 05:50 PM If you have a Harbor Frieght store near you they have the tools also. I have 2 different types, one like the one in the Auto Zone link and one like pliers only very thin. What you are trying to remove is a spring wire clip. Even with the tool they are hard to catch and remove.:smileyb:
Camino80 12-11-2010, 06:27 PM I've used a needle nose pliers and pushed the clip out of the groove.
skinyfisher 12-11-2010, 06:32 PM Just saw them today at NORTHERN TOOL SUPPLY for $3.60
tophes84elco 12-11-2010, 06:46 PM The tool is the way to got but I have taken them out before with a rag or piece of cloth by putting the middle part of the cloth in there and pulling back and forth on each end. This usually takes a couple of tries but can work.
Kerno 12-11-2010, 10:07 PM The clip is a horseshoe shape and is made out of about .040 diameter wire. They can be hard to see because the groove is just about in line with the large diameter of the crank. But, If you push the panel in, you should be able to see it. All you have to do is to get something under one end and it will lift right off. You may need to get it all the way off the handle to get the handle off, but you can install the handle with the clip in place, which is how GM did it.
centex396 12-12-2010, 12:17 AM I took my 70 down to the local body shop, gave the guy a five, and less than two minuets he had all four handles off. I went by around lunch time and I guess I just got lucky.
gilby 12-12-2010, 05:07 AM you need one of theses.......

theillcamino 12-12-2010, 07:01 AM I just did mine with my fingers, stuck em down in there and pulled one side up out of the groove. It takes a few tries and it hurts you fingertips pretty bad but it works! :nanawrench:

fixitman1 12-12-2010, 08:20 AM You can remove this WITHOUT spending a DIME Get a wash Rag runit back and forth behind The Handle and the clip will come out WATCH where the clip goes sometimes it doesnot Stick to the Rag Done this Many times !! Never failed :texas:
Kerno 12-12-2010, 09:31 AM The tools do work, but like the rest of us, the OP wants the handle off NOW, not next week.
I think the washrag trick is great. I've never used it. but I will next time I'm looking at removing a handle,
Brian Boru 12-12-2010, 10:01 AM Sounds like a rinky dink fix but it does work. No sweat involved. The way I was shown is take a piece of old tee shirt, maybe a foot long, give it a wrap behind the handle and whip the rag out real fast. The cloth cathches the retainer ring end and out it comes. Sometimes its caught in the rag and sometimes it takes a little flight to parts unknown. Watch for it. No damage to the door panel, either. Brian Boru
PaddyG 12-20-2010, 03:06 PM I bought the tool at Autozone and I had the clip off in minutes. Thanks Gilby for posting the pic made finding it much easier. :You_Rock:

I'm pretty sure i'm going to need to make a junk yard run. Can you folks tell me what other chevys would have door handles like this one?
Thanks all,
