I am interested in rebuilding the complete rear end in my 79 elky I was just wondering what kind of rear end should I be looking for, keep in mind I want to build this up to 500+RWHP so I need to have a solid base. Right now the engine and tranny are original so I need something thats going to bolt up. Is there anything out there or should I just wait till I get the new engine and tranny.
Thanks for the Help

Don't bother trying to build up your 7.5" rear. Even if you built it to the hilt it'll never handle 500HP. Try to find an 8.5" from a G-body 442, T-Type, or Grand National. They have 3.42 and 3.73 gears. Or, install an older 8.5" A-body Chevy 12 bolt using a South Side Machine kit.

The GM 12 Bolt and the FORD 9" are both really nice rear ends. The 12 Bolt is a little faster, takes less power, than the 9" but the 9" is a little bit stronger than the GM 12 bolt. Both can be made to handel what you will be producing.
