I know there are several companies that make and sell manual power steering rack mounts that bolt in and use "their" rack, i however am interested in a power rack to do away with the combersome steering, and clean things up as well as modernizing things a bit..
Anyone do this?
BTW it is all on a 5th gen

Do a search and also check Maliburacing web site, it can be done but it takes a lot of cutting and welding, well worth the problems IMO, someday I plan on doing a few myself, matty man:secret:

Here's a kit from a local race shop by me. However it's not power but seems like a good kit. http://tntraceshop.com/1978-1988_G-body_220150.html

it looks like with that kit you loose your front sway bar and that will do as much to harm the handling as the rack will do to help it.

Looks like just a drag racing only unit to me,, well worth the weight savings and handling for going in a straight line,, TNT makes some very good stuff!!

Yeah I like all the stuff they're making for the G-body. Check out their pics, they have a sweet wagon in there they did. Basically they're a chassis shop but sell everything that summit and jegs does and also fab their own stuff.

I have a 1950 mercury with a 1994 cadillac frame under it, and I installed a power rack and pinion by notching the front crossmember and welding in a fabricated bracket. The frame is very similar to the g body frame if not the same in that area. And I retained my sway bar.http://s146.photobucket.com/albums/r263/jamesrr2890/ (http://s146.photobucket.com/albums/r263jamesrr2890/) Click on my albums....merc

Couldnt access the pics from your Merc.. Could you post a direct link, i am interested in seeing your work..
Thanks..
BTW i think you are right, i think with the racing kits you loose the sway bar, which isnt an option.. But if im not mistaken you could likely mount it to the crossmember that already exists under the engine (for street driving you would want it there to eliminate bump steer) I have a friend who fabs up complete frames for lowriders and he is more than capable of this, just wanted to get some pics together so i had an idea...
