I've been struggling with getting the choke to work just right. The engine is an '87 MC High Output 305, with the Quadrajet and electric choke.
The Problem: Once the engine starts, it moves up to the high speed notch and idles about 1500-1600 RPM. After about 6-8 seconds the RPM's start to drop off, down to about 600-700. Most times, the engine stalls. Sometimes, the engine picks up the RPM's back to about 1200 and stays lit.
I know that once the engine starts, the vacumn break pulls the primary butterfly valve open about 3/8 of an inch. In playing with this, I can adjust how much it opens by turning the screw shown on the attached photo, although I can find no reference anywhere that this is the proper way to adjust. This seems to help the situation quite a bit. In fact, I got it working pretty well once, and then screwed it up by trying to get it better!
I keep reading that I should be bending the tang, rather than adjusting a screw.

Can you tell me the function of this screw, and the positive or negative results of turning it? Does it affect the secondary opening instead of the choke, and I'm just doing the wrong thing?
As always, your help is appreciated.
