i think this is the correct thread for this question.

i have a 1981 gmc caballero with the stock 267 motor. it has a single exhaust and a catalytic converter, but i wanted to get a glasspack for it.

how would my car sound with the glass packs and catalytic converter. can i get the sound everyone wants when they get cherry bomb glasspacks?

thanks

It will be louder, but not like a V-8 with dual exhaust and glasspacks.:texas:

The 267 is a V-8. I believe they only offered it for two years.

My old '81 had the 267 as well. I never did any mods to it when I had it, so I don't know how well that tiny V-8 will sound with different exhaust. Mine was very quiet, and very smooth running - even if it couldn't break even one tire free on dry pavement.

I do know when I had mine, finding any performance parts for it was near to impossible. If you are looking for performance, might be cheaper in the long run to look at swapping in a 350 (or 305). Performance parts are much easier to come by.

I took the catalytic converter off my car up here in Virginia plus alot more came off under the hood after that. I've got dual exhaust with my 350 today. Sounds like what I had back in the 60's, living my second child hood all over. :yell::yell:

I've just got manifolds with pipe to a "Y" muffler, each end dumps on either side. Pretty much a ghetto dual muffler and straight pipe. Sounds decent, a whole lot deeper than straight pipe, even though straight pipe is louder as a whole. As far as a catalytic converter, never had one. Id suggest buying a blanked out, or hollow one from a local shop to pass inspection if needed. Or go old school and use a piece of rhebar steel rod and knock the crap outa the inside of the one u got. It'll just crumble and break like a dinner plate. I think its made of porcelain?

its a ceramic compound, covered in alumina and silica. it also has platinum and palladium, a little bit rhodium and a handfull of other metals. before you just bust it out, if you plan on removing it replace it with pipe and take it in one piece to a scrap yard. some places buy them for upwards of $50 or more if theyre in one piece.

Dump the cat if you can pass inspection without it and get one of these. An old school glass pack.

Take it to a muffler shop and have a complete costum (True) dual exhaust installed with glasspaks, You will love it and never regret it. Doug

Many muffler shops are afraid to remove converters. One place near here got busted for removing converters, and we don't even have inspections here. Don't know how well a dual set-up with two small converters would work (?)

If law requirs you to have a cat, you need all of your exhaust to pass thru. If you have headers that run seperate all the way back, you need 2 cats for each pipe. 1 cat if your exhaust collects into one pipe before the muffler, in which case it would go in line before the muffler. In laymans terms as longs as all the exhaust you expel goes through a cat, you're good. Whether it be 1 or 20 cat's, lol.

The cats are a part of the federally mandated emissions system. Removing them may not be a State offense, but it is a Federal offense on any emissions controlled vehicle. So, unless you trailer the car to the shop, they are taking a huge chance by removing cats. Those Federal offenses are expensive.
