: SS or stock Steering Wheel? + 120mph speedo
lilbaggie 01-15-2011, 05:09 PM Greetings fellow Elco owners
In the never ending quest to noodle and waste money on my Elcos, i just happened to find a (Monte Carlo) SS steering wheel in my interior color (med gray) for cheap. The look for my 87 is a stock/ "upgraded stock" look with mostly factory and period correct mods. I've put the wheel on but i'm a bit torn. I've leather wrapped both and the SS has a thicker rim which feels "sportier" and nicer but the stock one i think looks better. The interior is factory with the exception of grey leather Camaro seats, kick panel speakers, radio and floor mats. Both the seats and the floor mats have the Monte style red SS logo like the wheel.
What do you guys (and gals) think? keep the SS or put the stock one back? (i wanted to post a poll with this thread but couldn't figure out how to do it)
I've also swapped in a 120mph Monte SS speedo and tach which looks good with either wheel!

Zerberfert 01-15-2011, 05:13 PM Imo I like the orginal one better. But I know what you are saying with the feel of a thicker wheel. How was it changing out the spedo? Did you have to recalbrate anything to get it to show the correct speed?
eldinino 01-15-2011, 05:21 PM I like the ss wheel better.
O. D. Showtime 01-15-2011, 05:25 PM I like the SS wheel...I'll be putting one in mine when the time comes. The one thing I find is the red SS emblem grabs your attention right away. It does tie in nice with the floor mats but I'm wondering what this type of center emblem might look like...

Silver bowtie...I have a SS wheel here I could slip this in the horn center and post a pic if you'd like to see it.
lilbaggie 01-15-2011, 05:27 PM Speedo was a pretty easy swap—the trickiest part being there's one bolt that holds the bezel on that is hidden behind the gear shift indicator but it's no biggie. It's a minor but neat little upgrade.
If your current 85 mph speedo is calibrated correctly, no additional calibration would be needed with the 120. It's plug and play. I had to have my original re-calibrated when i swapped out 16" rims and a 3.73 rear end.
What i didn't bother doing was spending $50 to NoHo Speedo match the original odometer (the 85 mph had 53k original miles!). May end up taking it out again and having them do it after all.
lilbaggie 01-15-2011, 05:29 PM O.D.
That black Chevy bowtie was the horn cap my wheel originally came with. I never bothered putting it on but maybe i'll do that tomorrow and post a new pic…
O. D. Showtime 01-15-2011, 05:35 PM Cool...I just took a look at my wheel here in the den and I have the silver bowtie emblem in it already...not to steal your fun but maybe I'll post up a pic.
O. D. Showtime 01-15-2011, 05:45 PM Here's mine with the silver bowtie...a pic in the vehicle would be better of course...

centex396 01-15-2011, 07:46 PM For me I like the SS wheel and the red bowtie center cap.
fixitman1 01-15-2011, 07:50 PM Installed a Black ss Wheel in My 85 I like it :texas:does not run any faster ???:dontknow:
truck 01-15-2011, 08:16 PM where did you get the guages maybe you could paint a bow tie on stock
lilbaggie 01-15-2011, 08:31 PM The red bow tie on black is nice… Come to think of it, a red SS on black would be perfect!
The 120 mph speedos came on the 87-88 Monte Carlo SSs i believe. There are 140mph speedo around from Lauren Engineering but those are a different design. Neither increase hp or top speed (as far as i know)…
Yeast1 01-15-2011, 11:06 PM Somehow this all looks familiar to me.......LOL
Oh yeah.......this is mine out in the garage now.

Donny
lilbaggie 01-16-2011, 07:34 AM Donny- Hah! Well, I did manage to keep it out of the photo for the ss pic. Plus it was 80° here yesterday. Too warm for closed toed footwear…
Yeast1- Is that a two -toned wheel you have or a wrap on the it?
Which, btw, if anyone is considering it, the Wheelskins leather wraps, at $30 are a really nice upgrade. A little pricier and little more work involved than typical auto parts store wraps but really worth it…

FYI, I changed my cluster out for a cluster with instrumation.
My original had 61K original miles on the clock.
Before installing the new cluster I was able to roll the odometer to the original mileage setting.
Not that hard a project to do. Guess that is why auto industry tried going to didgtal reads. BUT there is a way around that, too. Just change the clusters. Again plug-n-play, BUT have not figured out on how to change the readings on those, YET !!
So if you go digital, find a low mileage one at a salvage yard.
dabayelco 01-16-2011, 12:10 PM def go with the ss steering wheel i think it looks a lot better
kevinrom 01-16-2011, 12:35 PM personally i've grown to love my colorado custom steering wheel. it came on my elky when i got it. never really ever thought about a metal steering wheel but this one is just so nice to drive with it feels so perfect looks really good when its all shined up. but those hot days are murder, have to drive with your finger tips if you dont have anything handy like a steering wheel cover http://www.coloradocustom.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=43&DivCat=3
