over the past month my brakes have been feeling squishier and squishier and today they just decided to slow me instead of stop me. pretty scary at first. so i had to use my e brake most of the way to and from work. im not missing any fluid so thats not it. i was going to try bleeding them tomorrow to hope that helps. anyone got any ideas? and on my way home from work i was braking with what little braking power i had left i heard a sort of pop from under the hood and then my brake light went on. 85 elco mostly stock. front discs rear drums.

Sounds like a master cylinder. Keep in mind, the reman unit that you get from one of the part's chain's, may be junk. Just because you still have a problem, don't rule that out. You may get lucky and get a good one, just say'in.

Like Canted stated, get a new Master Cylinder, Murphys law will loom his ugly head here,, I have found out the hard way if your El Camino has high miles or if the calipers or wheel cylinders have not changed and came on the truck, their next. I do a complete service when I do a Camino like yours, new M/C calipers and wheel cylinders and all 3 rubber brake hoses and then bleed the brakes, I got a new M.C from NAPA for about 40.00 + - change,, good luck matty man
